I just got back from the Lyle Lovette show and thought I'd give you little review. Let me just say that it was one of the best shows I've seen in a while. This was the Large Band which I hadn't seen before. It consisted of some very notable players. Namely Leland Sklar on bass, Russ Kunkle on Drums, Buck Reid on steel and Gene Elders on fiddle. The show opened with the band running through a straight ahead jazz piece. The the back up singers did a funk type tune. Then the spot light hit the back of the theater on Francine Reed (I think) singing an old blues number "Wild Women Don't Get the Blues" This is Memphis after all. Then Lyle comes out and we're off and running. His set runs the gamut from Country swing, Blues, Southern Gospel, Celtic and even a little Bluegrass. He does a great job of spot lighting the band but with top notch players and singers who wouldn't. But the best thing was the mix was great. You could actually hear the vocals and the dynamics in the music. Maybe the venue helped as the Orpehum was built in the 20's as a live theater. Not a ton of steel work but what there was was tastfully done. BTW I picked up Buck's cd out front before the show. If you get a chance to see Lyle I don't think you'll be disappointed. Get him to play the "Truck - No Truck" game with the crowd. |

I've been a Lyle fan for years and seen many shows. It has moved up a notch with the addition of Buck, though.
I missed the Large Band show this year due to a session conflict |

Chris, thanks for coming to the show and for picking up my CD! Your right, there's not alot of room for "a ton" of Steel but there are so many players in the band that the challenge becomes staying out of each others way. I find it to be a great lesson in "team play"! I hope you enjoy my CD and thanks again!

Buck I listened to your cd yesterday for the first time and I thought it was great. My favorite tune is Sour Dough. Keep up the good work. |
