After over 20 years together, the group split up back in the mid '50s. The brothers (Henry, Cal, Cliff and Roy) all died long before Rose, who passed away in 1998. I think her last chart record was "Tia Lisa Lynn". That was about '68 or '69, I believe.

Rose Maddox. Yeah, the archetype west-coast honky-tonk-singin' woman. The Maddox Brothers broke up in the 50s, long before my time in honkytonks. Saw her many years ago - my memory's a bit fuzzy, but I believe in the early 70s. This was after her heyday, but she was still great. The thing that I remember is how direct and honest her singing was, the same way I think about Hank Sr. She just laid it out for you. I only saw her once, unfortunately.
Back then, the only records I could find of her were old 78s, wish I still had them. I bought an LP in the 80s of Rose with Merle Haggard and band (with Roy Nichols, Norm Hamlett, Eldon Shamblin, Tiny Moore) plus Emmylou Harris, on Varrick. Great record, called "Queen of the West", I agree with that moniker. They must have broke the mold when she passed on - I never hear people sing like that anymore.
Bear Family and others have reissued a lot of her earlier stuff. I really need to get some of these. |

Yep...they were living across from our house in Stockton, Ca. The thing I remember most was when they left for work....the flashy clothes and the bass fiddle inside the old 48 Desoto.They seemed to spend a lot of time in the San Joaquin valley in the early to mid 50's. Them were the days...all of us Okies out in California and the music was everywhere. |

| Hey Larry, speaking of their flashy outfits, I happen to own a pair of their Turk western pants, navy blue gabardine with orange flowery embroidery all over!! They sure were "the most colorful hillbilly band in the world". Also, do you happen to remember a steel player named Eddie Gabbard from that time? He was from Tracy, CA and played with various local bands there, even sat in with the Maddoxes I believe. He also played for Jack Thornhill & The Royal Texans which was a local band too. |

I played several jobs on six string with Rose around central California in the late sixties and again in the late seventies. She was a lot of fun to pick with, very high energy. A real one of a kind lady.

| I played with Fred Maddox for a while in the sixties and had a great time! Ol' Fred was quite a unique character! He played that old doghouse bass of his but we had an electric bass in the band as well, thank Heaven for that! During that same period I got to pick with Rose a few times as Fred owned the club we were working and he could get Rose to guest star pretty reasonable! She was a good talent and they both put on a great show!.....JH in Va. |

| Thanks everyone; I think that they used to play on "Cal's Corral" (remember that old TV show in southern Ca) and if I remember correctly, Fred would put his chewing gum on the top of the keyhead of his bass before playing. I'll never forget them, I thought they were great. Rose reminded me of one of my aunts. |

| Yes I remember them well. They were a class act.I have allways been a sucker for Nudie style outfits all the old class acts wore in those days,You never saw them perform in ragged jeans and tank top shirts.They had to much respect for themselves and their fans.[It's called show business].I have been chastised for my opinion of the new artists and the way they dress on stage,but I'll never change my mind.If an artist has been given the honor of walking onto the stage of the Ryman,they should'nt look like they just slept in the ally behind Tooties. They are desecration that great institution.Back to Rose and the guys,I'm proud to say as children they grew up on a farm in my home state of Ala.,moved west in the years when things were really rough for poor sharecroppers and became a first class act. |

I've been looking for "Queen of the West" for quite a while. Even AllMusic.com didn't list it. (Roy Nichols is my favorite six string player.) Somebody please make me a copy!

| I ditto what Charles D.Said 100%.I played steel for Rose may times back in the 60's.She was a class act.I still have some old pictures of the band when i played with her.She wore a classy out fit covered with red roses.She had the rhythm section driving the beat up the wall with out runing our ears and or rushing.She sounded so great.But of course these were the days when the pickers knew how to balance their sound.They volume control on the amps meant just that.Control.No sound men needed to screw up the mix.As Curly Chalker said,you spend a life time gettig a sound and it takes a sound man only a couple of minutes to screw it up.Or something like that.Ah,those were the days my friend we thought they would never end.lolTracy |
