Paul, Why don't you take one of your Bigsbys down there and see what they say about it? It would be interesting to see if they have a clue. I'd love to see the look on your face when they say: Do you have any idea what this thing is worth? Billy W

Billy W-My girlfriend got a ticket from her sister to go down with her to Navy Pier for the show taping last summer-Red asked me to give her something to take along "That would get her on the television show" I replied that I had just the items for that ticket-It turns out they selected her and the matching pair of tricones for a video clip right away! She may be on tonight or one of the following two Mondays I don't know which-I don't know if they have any idea of what Bigsbys are worth either-and it would have been harder for her to carry a triple neck down there and set it up

Larry R-Thanks-The roadshow appraiser would have flunked a botany class-He mistakenly identified the guitars as "Style 3 Lilly of the Valley" circa 1934 when in fact they are "Style 4 Chrysanthemum" circa 1930-Perhaps that is why I believe his appraisal price is slightly lower for the pair than the sum of what I could sell them for individually-The guitars did not come to me together-they were acquired separately to my surprise with the consecutive numbers

Lilies or chrysanthemums? Whatever. So he'll never get a job announcing the Rose Parade! At least he knew that those are two incredibly gorgeous guitars.

Most importantly, Paul -- it left my wife convinced of what a fantastic deal I got when you sold me that 1931 Style 1-1/2. So maybe now I can convince her that I should take all the money I saved and ...

Last month I'm thinking on the Hot Springs Road Show they had a Style 3, Lily of Valley. I think the appraiser said $7000? Said it would be worth $10,000 if it did not have the square neck. You guys decide for yourself. Seems the roadshow may not be real consistent as dealing with different appraisers and it is only quick verbal, not a written appraisal.

I used to have a Style 3 National. Absolutely perfect mint condition. Never played, original case, no dents, dings, wear, or scratches. Bought it in the late 70's at Pennsylvania flea market. It had apparently spent first 40 years under a Mennonite ladies bed. Sold it back in the mid-80's through Gruhn's Guitars. I was too scared to use it as I did not want to be first one to put a little nick in it.

Paul,
P.S. the serial number on the one I sold was 2568. Roadshow said your's about 2600, 2601? I'm sure mine found a very happy owner. Far as I can figure prices have really come up since the 1980's. I've still got pictures which is enough for me.

Colm C-I saw the Arkansas show with the guy and his style 3-she valued it at $6000 which according to Vintage Guitar Magazine Price Guide would be a rather high end price for a style 3 square neck-the round neck 3 is worth closer to $15000-you are correct about the serial numbers-PW

Those who have missed the road show last Monday night and wish to see the guitars can check local PBS listings on Saturday afternoon for a repeat telecast (3:00 PM here in Chicago)

Paul,
Your post did rekindle some of my curiosity on old Nationals. I just bought Bob Brozman's "The History and Artistry of the National Resonator Instruments" I'd strongly recommend this book to any National owners.

I was pleasantly surprised to see The Style 3 Tricone serial # 2568 (the same guitar I sold back in the 1980's) is shown on page 62 and also on color plates on pages 162 and 163. (if anyone doesn't believe me I've got my own pictures a copy of the sales contract through Gruhn's Guitars).

Changing the subject to Style 4 roundneck, I see Gruhn's Guitar has a Style 4 round neck for sale in his catalog for about $22,500, case not included. I assume it is the guitar players that drive the cost up on the round neck 'cause there are many guitar players that can't take a steel and play the square necks?
