On the radio today....worst song EVER!
I couldn't believe it....."is this a joke?" i thought to myself.
Country meets rap!?!?
I think the song was called "Chicken with a Train." It was Big & Rich with someone else. Has anyone else heard this song? What a disgrace to country music. And what an insult to all the great songwriters out there.
Ugh.....

Heee heee! I knew this one was coming! I played guitar on some of the sessions. It has steels and fiddles on it! Steel players were Mike Johnson and Dan Dugmore. Jonathon Yuddkin and Larry Franklin on fiddles. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. They expect some people to hate it but also some to like it and therefore sell records.

I guess I'm weird or something but I kinda liked it. Ol' "Cowboy Troy" does a pretty good job on this one. I don't really like Rap much but there's something about Big & Rich and their whole outlook on music in general that turns me on. I'm a 65 year old retired picker too. I can't explain what it is but I just like 'em. I have their CD and really enjoy the thing. I love classic country too but there's room for it all in my book....JH in va.

Ha Ha, I haven't even heard the tune yet & I'm sure I like it
Jerry - Gotta agree with you there. You got a couple of years on me but JUST a couple. I think there are two things that attract me to B&R. First, you can actually hear the fun they are having. Second, they don't take themselves too seriously. Just listen to "Six Foot Town".
James - glad to hear you are still working with these guys and having fun. Tell Troy he's "slicker than the grease on a barbecue brisket!" Best Rap line ever written

I'm really glad some pickers are getting work. My favorite thing about B&G is the volume control. It can't be worse then Luckenbach by Kenny Chesney and Kid Rock. I'll bet Willy and Waylon are spinning right now, and Willy's still alive.

I know a bunch of you boys are not gonna agree with me, but I like Big and Rich. I'm not saying I like ALL of their tunes, but I like the way they have stood up to Nashville and have shaken things up out there. God knows changes have been needed. Now we finally have a group of people that are doing things differently and having success.
Howard, you mentioned Willie and Waylon....is this that much different than waht they did back in the '70's? They were fighting the system and found a way to become successful, just like B&R. It took me a while to come around on the Muzik Mafia thing, but now I'm on board.
John Rich is now the genius of Nashville.....who'da thunk it!

I was having a conversation about this with a certain well recorded guy in Nvl lately, and I think both of us agreed that one thing that is SORELY lacking in "today's" country music is "The Novelty Tune".
WTF folks?
Don't like it turn the dial.
There are several songs out there rght now that I consider "the Dumbest" contenders.
One being "Trying to find the perfect man is like trying to find Atlantis." I'd probably like the video better..
With some of this latest raft of female singers, I'm tempted to say that they all sound acceptably good vocal wise, and I can now pick for the one with the least bushwhipped body, and nicest smile, and nobody will think less of my motives.
I've always been a Carlene Carter fan.
What were the songs I liked most?
I can't remember.
I loved Emmy Lou Harris for ten years before I found out what the words to her songs were.
So Shoot Me, as we say up here..
"The Purple People Eater was the #1 song for 6 weeks in 1958and the #24 song of the 1955-1959 rock era. It sold over 3 million records and received a Gold Record within 3 weeks after it was released. And over 100 Million Copies Overall!!!
Words and music by Sheb Wooley.
Lyrics to Purple People Eater.
Well I saw the thing comin' out of the sky
It had the one long horn, one big eye.
I commenced to shakin' and I said "ooh-eee"
It looks like a purple people eater to me.
It was a one-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater.
(one-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater)
A one-eyed one-horned, flyin' puple people eater
Sure looks stange to me. (one eye?)
Well he came down to earth and lit in a tree
I said Mr. Purple People Eater don't eat me
I heard him say in a voice so gruff
I wouldn't eat you cuz you're so tough
It was a one-eyed, one-horned flyin' purple people eater
one-eyed, one-horned flyin' purple people eater
one-eyed, one-horned flyin' purple people eater
Sure looks strange to me. (one horn?)
I said Mr. Purple People Eater, what's your line
He said it's eatin' purple people and it sure is fine
But that's not the reason that I came to land
I wanna get a job in a rock and roll band
Well bless my soul, rock and roll, flying purple
people eater. Pidgeon-toed, undergrowed, flyin'
purple people eater (we wear short shorts)
Flyin' purple people eater
sure looks strange to me.
And then he swung from the tree and lit on the
ground. He started to rock, really rockin' around
It was a crazy little ditty with a swingin' tune
(sing aboop boop aboopa lopa lum bam boom)
Well, bless my soul, rock and roll
flyin' purple people eater.
Pigeon-toed, undergrowed, flyin' purple peopleeater.
Flyin' little people eater
Sure looks strange to me. (purple people?)
And then he went on his way, and then what do
you know. I saw him last night on a TV show.
He was blowing it out, a'really knockin' em dead
Playin' rock and roll music through the horn in
his head (clarinet solo) ( Tequila)"
Yeah, all this new fangled stuff..
No accountin fer it.
boop boop aboopa lopa lum bam boom indeed...

I think the song is pretty entertaining. I DO NOT think it should be on country radio. It's not country music. Rap should be on the station with all the other rap stuff. It doesn't make sense to me to promote yourself in the country genre if your doing rap. If I do polka I don't think I'm going to go on MTV to showcase my skills.

Aplogies to anyone who played on it, I didn't say the playing was bad, just the song and the production. Call me old fashioned, but when I turn on the country station, I want to hear country!

Nate,
Please, no apologies necessary! I was actually kind of amused since I have been expecting this song to get noticed here (kind of like a Robert Randolph thread) as it is expected to be controversial, to say the least. The Big & Rich boys have been slammed here before (and I have wrongly taken offense to some of it) but this is actually not their record per say (though they were involved in it).

I guess it wasn't very polite to slam B&G, others like them and that's just fine. Not every one likes what I like. As for turning the station, I actually knew that I could do that already. It would be nice tho, to be able to listen to country if that's what you like and not have to change stations.

James,
Just wait until they see what we are doing on the CMT Music Awards in about 2 weeks. I'll never hear the end of it! Just remember, this was CMT's choice...not Gretchen's.
