I was listening to late night AM last evening and picked up a station from Wyoming. They had an ad for a syndicated classic country show this weekend which said it would be a special program celebrating Bob Wills' 100th birthday.
Now that's an event all steelers should celebrate!
Regards,

Bob Wills was one of, if not the original Fender booster. Bob Wills gave Fender the exposure that put Fender on the map. There were others such as Spade Cooley but Bob Wills was the first. Leon McAuliffe played one of the very first Fender steel guitars.
Thank you Sam for remembering

Long live Bob Wills !
the Knight of Tweed i'm sure, has convinced Fender of the importance & necessity in proposing a Bob Wills Centenial model steel guitar

I just listened to some of the old Columbia recordings from the late 1930's - these boys were really hot!
Just think about all the great steel players Bob had in his band: Leon McAuliffe, Noel Boggs, Les Anderson, Herb Remington, Billy Bowman, Bobby Koefer...
Kind Regards, Walter

Anyone in the Toronto area can celebrate the centenary in proper style with the Sunday night tribute at Lula Lounge. Steve Briggs of the Bebop Cowboys has put together a great show, with an augmented version of the Bebops as the house band and at last count almost thirty headliners - Tom Wilson , Michael Kaeshammer, Col. Tom Parker, Terra Hazelton, Alex Pangman, Doug Paisley, Danny Marks, to name a few. Ah-hah! |

I was in Dallas a few weeks ago and ran into old friend Tommy Allsup. He told me that he, Leon Rausch, Tommy Morrell and the current "Texas Playboys" band are working on a new album to celebrate Bob's 100th birthday. Something to look forward to!

And let's not forget child prodigy Vance Terry who was 16 when he worked with Bob Wills. Vance did many recording sessions and transcriptions with both Bob and Billy Jack. He regards Tiny Moore's teachings as some of the major stepping stones in his career. Vance considered his performance of "Boston Fancy" with Bob Wills one of his best. His fave technical steel players were Jerry Byrd and Buddy Emmons. Billy Jack's band was his favorite that he played for. When asked what career advice he would offer to to a young player he said, "Learn proper hand and bar technique, and use the same advice that Herb Remington taught me, 'Learn every scale on your entire fret board'".
