Anyone here ever play with Mike?

He will be doing a 3 day master class nearby here later this month.

And though I am no slouch, it might be cool to take it , and also make contact with Mike and the other good mandolinists around here to.

Any comments on where Mike sits in the pantheon of players.

I am of course a huge fan of Grisman and Bush, and the group Otrio from Brazil.

My favorite "newgrass" album is "Like Minds" from a group called Psychograss with Marshall. Fiendish version of "Third Stone from the Sun" - they do the psychedelic space-out interlude better than Hendrix did....

Mike Marshall is an alumni of the David Grisman Quintet. It doesn't get any better than that. You're lucky to have an opportunity like this!

David Donald (and anyone else who cares), Go to this website: http://www.woodsongs.com/showlist.asp

If you have "high speed" internet, download the video of show #287 (180 meg file). It's Mike Marshall and Chris Thile. Just the two of them and their mandolins, mandocello's, etc. It will blow your mind. Both of them are thoroughly amazing!

Incidentally, there are some awesome shows archived on this website. My favorite that I've downloaded is show #199 (Chris Thile and Bryan Sutton). Those two do about a 20 improv at the end of the show! I have no words to describe how much I dig it. I watch that one segment at least once a week. The Tommy Emmanuel show (#245) is good too. Oh! I almost forgot show #323 (Burrito Deluxe) with the legendary Hall of Famer Sneaky Pete! Just go to the link and you'll see what I mean. Too many good shows and not enough time to download them all. I download at least one a week.

Respectfully,
Dave Burr

Starts in 2 hours... dawn patrol here.
Will report back, should be interesting.

Thi sis also day one of a 3 day mandolin festival,
with people from 6-7 countries that I know of so far.

Well, Mike Marshall is very cool and a serious, serious picker.

I only had 4 hours of sleep, but got some good stuff from day one. He's a good teacher too.

But the OTHER guy in the afternoon... ooh, ohh la la ;Hamilton De Holdanda from Brazil.
An AMAZING Choros player. A good teacher too, but it's translated from portugese to french, and by a non musician...
so it can be a bit odd, but he has some english too.

He and Mike have been preparing a duet for Saturday night
and they are JUST SCARY together.
Well I need sleep.

I will be playing with Mike and Hamilton on the finalle,
on some cool brazillian tunes.
Most likely both contrebass and mandolin.

John McG. Mike says hi.

Well it was a very cool day, and a amazing evening.

I shot video of Mike and Hamilton playing solo performances,
and the more than an hour of duets in several styles.
These guys are scary...

I did also play at the end, on mandolin, but not on bass...
a certain well know bassplayer walked in unexpectedly mid-afternoon and played my upright bass.

John Paul Jones from a little band called Led Zepelin.

He actually does latin stuff pretty darned good, and is a quite nice guy. I was talking with him and joking around during the afternoon session,
with out even making the connection he was THAT J.P Jones.

So all this mandllin masterclass and festival thing was MUCH better than expected. Played on stage with 3 living legends and that's not a bad night.

Next time it will be on Corsica.
