Okay, who *knows* Bakersfield, CA please?

Post by JoeB »

Hello all,

I'll be heading to the southwest area in November '04 and am thinking of zipping over to Bakersfield CA if I can.

I'm wondering if any of you who may have lived there would know of any actual honky-tonks left?

Thanks and keep well,

Joe Burns

I feel certain Mr. Petree will help you, as will Mr. Tom Brumley if you will e-mail him at: brumshow@mailbox-it.com . Plus, he and Mr. Petree have been friends for years. Have fun and best wishes!

Larry Petree is one nice feller. He fixed up an old Emmons for me once. Great picker too. Haven't seen or heard anything about him in a while. Larry? Where ya at?

Larry will certainly point you in the right direction. I believe the "Rockin' Rodeo" is again featuring live country music on Thursday and Friday nights. Larry is probably even playing...

Michael,
Yes, Mr. Tom Brumley DID move back to Branson, Missouri, a long time ago, but I feel confident that he still knows Bakersfield. Besides, I think he and Doyle were out there recently to celebrate Buck's 75th Birthday. I could be mistaken, though.

Sadly, there's one true honky tonk remaining...Trout's located in Oildale, a near-by suburb of Bakersfield. Former Capitol artist Red Simpson, and steeler Larry Petree are regulars every Monday night from 7:00 to 10:30 or so. Guest musicians and artists frequently stop by. It's basically the Bakersfield Sound. The rest of the week it's former Capitol artist Bobby Durham and the Tex Pistols.

If you'd like to see Buck O and the Buckaroos, they entertain every Friday, and Saturday night, at Buck's Crystal Palace in Bakersfield. They do a great show and the cover is only $5. The Palace has a fine restaurant featuring Western cuisine. You need reservations in advance. Try the website www.buckowens.com for more information.

Hope you've found this to be helpful

Gary,

Bakersfield must have really changed. I lived there for about ten years, left in 1991.

When I was there we had Trout's, Tex's Barrel House, The Funny Farm, Wild Bill's Saloon and a few others. I think the Blackboard was still open, too. What happened to all of them? I remember that The Silver Bullet Lounge, which was at Skyline Lanes (or Feddie's Top of the Hill, as some old time Bakersfield residents still called it) had just closed due to an estate dispute. It is so sad that all the good honky tonks that feature good live music are slowly dwindling away. Image Image I guess we'll just have to keep the good ole honky tonks alive in our memories.
