I just watched the 1978 Lost Outlaw performance video of Waylon Jennings. There's a priceless moment on "Tonight The Bottle Let Me Down" where Mooney takes three quarters of solo and then looks over at Waylon to tag it off on guitar. Waylon is looking down, misses a couple of beats and then tags it off. He looks over at Mooney with a big smile and says "I wasn't listening". Well Waylon starts singing the chorus and all you can hear is Mooney jamming answer licks after every line that Waylon sings as if to say " hey you stupid %@&!?! get your head out of your butt and look at me!". Waylon is just looking at Mooney as if to say " I know, I know, I'm listening". Its down right priceleess. This is absolute classic stuff. I forgot just how good Waylon Jennings was with Mooney. This is a must have. [This message was edited by Kevin Hatton on 01 September 2004 at 08:48 PM.] [This message was edited by Kevin Hatton on 02 September 2004 at 09:48 AM.] |

Don't tell them. It's our 'secret language'. |

After numerous near disasters, I eventually came to believe that one of the most important talents of a performing band was making an onstage
"train wreck" appear to be planned and a part of the show!

This video was only $11.00! Mooney plays his a$$ off. We are working up "This Time" with our band next week. I'm gonna study Mooney real hard on this tape and incorporate his style in my playing. Who said country steel guitar was dead. Not as long as I'm around boys! I'll be playing that song on my ZB Custom in big venues starting the end of the month. Long live Waylon and Mooney! |
