Just look at them boots!
There have been some VERY strange things happening up here in Minnesota. It all started about a year ago. First, my American Jackson Soloist guitar, you know, the one I had all the custom pickups made for. It used to grunt, groan, growl, whistle & scream. It seems to have turned into this thing called an American Telecaster. Sure sounds different but brings about a continuous smile.
Another really strange thing. Somebody dumped all those fat distortion sounds off of my POD. It's now filled with all these Blackface and Line6 Clean settings. Isn't that wierd?
Also, get this. All my Vinnie Moore and Joe Satriani guitar videos have turned into videos by people named Flacke and Cashdollar. This is so wierd.
Oh yeah, and I can't seem to find Guitar Center anymore. I keep ending up at a place online called Scotty's and a store here called The Pickers Parlour. This is just too strange, like that new movie where they steal your past!
Also, this new guitar appeared. You hold it on your lap and get this, it has eight strings. Can you imagine? And there's all these new picks too. Three of them on my right hand and two of them are steel. It's just bizarre. And, there's this really heavy steel bar thing that looks like a giant bullet. It really hurts when you are barefooted and drop it on your toe. Really entertaining to play with though.
My brother writes, "OK where are you hiding my REAL brother? He's singing all these old songs that Mom used to sing to us. And, who is this Radney Foster guy? Somebody named Dwight Yoakam too. Where does he dig this stuff up anyway?"
I blamed it all these guys that hang out in a really cool place called the Steel Guitar Forum. Whatever they have it sure is contagious and I'm not sure there is a cure!
Don
PS - Why do the have different guages for steel finger picks? I bought heavy guage. I just figured they would last longer and hold thier shape better.

I've been enjoying reading your posts, Don.
Welcome to my world...
Your situation is not as unusual as you would think. It's just that those of us that know all the Hendrix and Cream guitar solos have yet to admit it.
Just like many of us choose to save our time and not try to explain why musicians should be open-minded about different styles, or (Heaven Forbid) even learn something from them.
The real players already know that, the others won't be convinced by anything.
Steel Pickers usually like heavy picks. They sound better.
.025 is rather standard.
I don't know who the other ones are for.

Not this cowboy. Even when I sit behind the steel it still sounds like rock 'n' roll. I like to listen to some country music once in a while, but I just can't see myself playing any of it. |

Joey Ace - thanks for your comment and also the information on the picks. Looks like I made a good guess!
Chris Forbes - Do they still make poodles?
Leslie Ehrlich - Keep on rockin'! That's my motto.
Ernie Renn - Brainerd is beautiful. My kids go to camp every summer at Trout Lake. Next time I'm up there we'll have to get a beer and talk steel.
