It might seem like an obvious answer but the question came up recently regarding a performance that was required to have at least 3 original songs in the set, as opposed to cover songs.
As it pertains to a band....does that mean one of the band members wrote the song?
Or all the members wrote the song?
Or, as we take it, does it mean a song that was written by someone not in the band, but was written for the band, and was not previously released.

It means a song that has not been recorded and distributed by anyone more famous than you.
So if you sang a song by me, that would be original, but if I'd already had a hit with it, sung by Celine Dion or Elton John (I'd cry all the way to the bank!) then it would be a cover.

As a songwriter, I would tend to agree with Dave's loose definition. |
