Don't be scaring me like that, Bob. What with the news about Speedy and Bobby White, I don't like to see any "hero needs help" topics!

I,m doing this from memory so it may be wrong. I think these were made in oklahoma a few yrs back and the poeple that had them loved em. I believe that Reece had a 12 strger that he cut the album of tx swing with. I suggest you contact Reece. CC

I hope I'm mistaken but I believe Jim Boen passed away a few years ago. I had the chance to play a Boen steel about ten years ago as well as hear a fine Hawiian-style player sttretch out on one. I would characterize the Boen steel as pretty close to a Remington in terms of sound and design details. IMHO these guitars were nothing to write home about.

Jimmy Boen did pass away a few years ago, a few of his guitars pedal and non-pedal are still being played. Jerry Roller would be the one to contact about the particulars. Jerry lives a few miles from the area in which Jimmy lived.

I consider myself very fortunate to still today have the first Boen non pedal guitar of it's kind.

I only know of two other 12 string guitars Jim built with the design I had submitted. One belongs to Calvin Phelps in Louisiana, and the other belongs to Heinz Reuter in Dallas.

Jim called years ago after learning I had been involved in an auto accident in which I was hit from behind while sitting on an entry ramp onto a freeway, which numbed my feet and fingers due to a neck injury.

During our conversation, Jim asked if I had considered playing a non pedal steel while I was convalescing since I could not feel the pedals. (how I managed to keep my picks on when I could not feel my fingers is another story)

I told him I had not thought about it, but the non pedal concept was interesting to me. He then said, if you will design it, I'll built it......"I did, and he did".

About a month later he pulled into my drive at home and presented me with the first 12 string Boen lap steel ever made with the exact design I had earlier drawn which had the same string spacing as my MSA guitar.

I was so impressed with the guitar, and my enthusiasm for the non pedal concept was so revived, that I immediately called my friend Johnny Gimble and we recorded a CD which I later named "Steel Play'n Texas Swing". I have to admit, that recording has been the best selling instrumental recording I have ever made.

Jim passed away a couple of years ago, but his legacy of being an exceptional person who was thoughtfull, considerate and kind, is something for which I will always acknowledge and be eternally grateful.

Out of the kindness of his heart he built me what I truly consider to be a unique, exceptional and great sounding instrument which I will cheerish forever.
