RFD Satellite Programs

Do any of you get the RFD Channel on satellite which originates in Nashville ? In addition to some good country farm reports, antique tractors, horse training, etc--they carry Willie Nelson's library of tapes of the Old Wilburn Bros show with Hal Rugg in his early years and "Pop Goes The Country" It's channel 9409 here on Dish Network. Really enjoyable viewing.-

I get the program. Some nice stuff there.
However, I wish they wouldn't run their advertising "crawl" during the program material.

I saw that it was really something! There was Hal sitting there behind a Sho Bud playing on the back neck. It was good to see all of them when they were in their prime including Loretta. The were good then and those of them that are still living are good now.

This is great news to me. I got out of bed at 12:25 A.M. this morning to see the Porter Waggoner show. I will be getting up at 5:00 A.M. to see the "Wilburn Brothers" and "Pop Goes The Country". I was pretty young when these shows were on but do not remember much about the music. I look forward to seeing Hal Rugg on the "Wilburn Brothers" show. I had a man tell me one time how he enjoyed their show and how Hal Rugg was the steel player and how great he was. I say bring them shows back and let us steelers see some good country. I did not know who the steel player was on the Porter Waggoner Show. It looked like to me he was standing up but it appeared to have 2 pedals but on the pickup end of the steel. I may be wrong but they never showed a complete shot of the steel player. He also sang harmony, leaving his steel and coming into the camera range. Also, I do remember the fiddle player from years ago even though I do not know what his name was. He played like he had a tremendous amount of energy.

Paul-That steel player was Don Worden with Porter Wagner.
I don't remember him playing any pedals like they do today.
Yes, he did play standing up.

On the Wilburn Brothers Shows, Hal Rugg played a lot of great original stuff.

I especially liked it when he got on the bottom neck of that Sho-Bud and played some great C6th chords, on even country tunes.

Those were great entertaining shows and should be brought back, they are timeless....al

I am now on Satellite TV and get RFD-TV and like the re-runs of the Wilburn Brothers, Pop Goes The Country and all the others too.
It would be great if they ran The Ernest Tubb Show too!

The fiddle player with all the energy on Porter's show, I believe is Mac Magahay (probably spelled wrong). Buck Trent also played his electric banjo (sorry b0b) on that show.

I saw "Pop Goes The Country" on Thursday when Ronnie Milsap was on. Was the steel player Dickie Overby? I could not see the player well enough to know. Cute little pink suits they were wearing.

Someone needs to tell the folks in Carrollton, Texas that they need to go to Nashville.

Actually RFD-TV is based in Dallas, TX and the studios are in Carrollton, TX.

I was up early this morning so I could watch the "Wilburn Brothers" and "Pop Goes The Country". I do not remember the Wilburn Brothers but I do rember Pop Goes The Country. Hal Rugg was the steel player on the Wilburn Brothers and he sounded great back then. He was playing a ShoBud steel. The steel player on Pop Goes The Country was playing an Emmons guitar but I could never tell who he was. He was very smooth and clean and played one tune on the C6th neck and took a break on that song but all the camera showed was the fretboard. I saw the Porter Waggoner show again and it was the same show as Saturday but I enjoyed seeing it again. I hope RFD will bring back some more of these classic shows. I was very young when they were televised and remember very little about some of them. I saw Faron Young and I believe his name was Slim Pickens as well as Doly Parton on the Porter Waggoner show. The Wilburn Brothers used Buddy Spicher as the fiddler along side Hal Rugg on steel.

I also discovered that RFD-TV was replaying these great shows. I have now recorded each one that has been on in the last two weeks. Although some of them are repeated two to three times a week. You might also like to check out one program that runs on Saturday evenings. It is called Music from Midwest, which is actually a broadcast of shows from the Midwest Country Theater in Sandstone, MN. These shows highlight some older Nashville singers, such as Narvel Felts, Bill Anderson, Tommy Cash, Stonewall Jackson, etc, as well as some fine local Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin singers and players. I know many of the singers and players on the show, and have performed on that stage a couple of times. The featured steel players you will see are most likely to be Joe Savage, Cal Hand, and Curt Olsen. You may even catch Eddie "Steelkid" Lange. The lead guitar player is Leroy Glaser, and he is a fine musician. I would encourage you to catch this program on Saturdays, and let me know what you think. As with any local singers or musicians, not all of them are first class, but who is at the beginning.

Also, one of the featured bands will be the Rose Family Band, and they include Larry, on Bass, his wife Bev on rhythm guitar, his uncle Dave on lead, and Curt Olsen on steel. Bev is one of the finest female vocalist you will ever hear, and sadly Curt passed away last September, but these shows will highlight his fine steel playing.

Let me know what you think about these programs, because I have a vested interest in these people, as many are friends of mine.

Also, if you have Dish Network, they are now playing all the Sirius Radio channels. I think that channel 6035 is called Classic Country and they have been playing some good stuff on there. There is also a good bluegrass channel too. You can also get on the internet and listen to XM Radio's channel 13, which is Hank's Place, where they also play some really good old country music.

I contacted RFDTV and they told me their channel will be available on regular DirecTv after June 1st. You will not need the elliptical dish that they required in the past.

OK - Now I'm confused ---are there more than one studio location across the nation ? --My RFD station plainly states it has moved to Nashville. Max Armstrong has mentioned it several times on the U.S. Farm report program -

It matters not to me where they are located. Just keep bringing more of these classic shows. I would like to see the "Ernest Tubb Show" as well as some others. How about "That Nashville Music" which featured Buddy Emmons and the Sound Factory Band. Those were really the good ole days of country music.

Thursday night at 8:P.M. Central time the Wilburn Brothers Show will be aired followed by Pop Goes The Country. Friday evening at 6:30P.M. the Porter Waggoner show will be aired. I sure have enjoyed these shows. The channel is 9409 on Dish Network.

Just saw another Wilburn Brothers Show and another Porter Wagoner Show along with Pop Goes The Country. I have enjoyed watching these shows even though they are probably around 30 years old. Pop Goes The Country is the youngest of these shows and Willie Nelson was featured with Jimmy Day on steel guitar. I sure do miss Jimmy as well as some of the other greats who have passed on. If you like the older country music the RFD channel on Dish Network is the one to watch. It is channel 9409.

Well, I finally got to see the Wilburn Brothers show. What can I say? Probably the finest music I have ever heard on my TV. No lead guitar, Buddy Spicher's awesome fiddling (double-stops, anyone?), and HAL RUGG on steel. Man, can that guy ever play! I love those fat C6 chords behind that lightning-speed "Devil's Dream", and "Silver Dew on the Blue Grass Tonight" simply blew me away. First class for sure. I'm just shy of my 30th birthday and can slightly remember Pop Goes the Country from when I was a small child, but never have I seen anything quite like the Wilburn Brothers Show. I also really enjoy the Saturday evening show from Minnesota. It sure ain't the Grand Ole Opry, just good simple country music, nicely played. Thanks RFD-TV!!
