Wow I'm honored..."I'd like to thank the academy and my Mom and.....>>>bla bla...ha
But to be serious for a sec. I will agree TOTALLY with Dale Watson and Heather Myles.
I've played with hundreds of Singers and those are the only two that sing perfect pitch live on stage or in the studio; it don't matter...they both sing perfect all the time in any situation....and not many can do that.

| I like your picks Robbie, and this is a great post as an antidote for the other awards post. I'll add Big Sandy, who have been carrying the western swing/bop torch for years. Recently I was fortunate enough to see the Lucky Stars, from LA, featuring Jeremy Wakefield on steel. They are simply amazing, playing dead on Western Swing ala Billy Jack Wills or Tiffany era Bob Wills, so I'll throw them in, too. Let's add a memorial award for the late Ray Condo. His "Swing Brother Swing" album is one of my all time favorites. |

Interesting that the majority of the list, so far, are artists based in Texas. Texas seems to be a stronghold for real country and western music vs the Nashville ersatz stuff.
Come on all you folks who posted your disgust at the recent "Country Music" awards show (what a joke)! Here's your chance to post who YOU think is making the best real country music today, and who YOU think should be recognized. |

Apologies to Alan Jackson and George Strait who continue to produce quality music.
PS, I have no idea if these folks/tues were recognized at the recent Crappy Music Awards, couldn't bring myself to watch.

I'll take a chance of getting flamed here:
I agree with the song "Paint Me a Birmingham" but not the artist. Now don't get me wrong, I like Tracy Lawrence, but Ken Mellons recorded the song first. IMHO Ken Mellons version of the song is much better than Tracy's. Ken Mellons just doesn't have the major label backing that Tracy Lawrence does. It's sad that the best version of the song was cast aside by main stream radio because of the pressures of the major labels. I just find it sad that the listening public is denied the best music by the "big boys" in the suits who really don't know what real country music is and wouldn't recognize it if jumped up and bit them in the a$$. Okay, I'll get off of my soap box now.

I gotta' be honest. I liked Ken Mellons stuff. I know that John Hughey liked it as well. When I visited with John at a Vince Gill show a few years back, I asked him about Ken. He liked working with him and he sort of eluded to the idea that he thought that the powers that be weren't giving him much of a break.
Personally, I think that he blows Kenny Kracker out of the water. I hope he gets another chance.
