What have you heard playing at Wal-Mart?

Last week I coundn't believe they were playing You're Gonna Ruin My Bad Reputation by Ronnie McDowell(sp). I haven't heard that song in about 15 yrs. Do they play the same tracks across the country?

I am not defending Wal-Mart merely stating a painful fact.

I make my living as a signpainter/artist. if this was 20 years ago I would be buried with work..Computers came in and anyone with a few bucks could buy a franchise to start a vinyl sign biz.

It makes no difference whether they can artisticly do a good job...they can set themselves up..and the biz gets dummied down.

They don't make buggie whips anymore either.

That's the way life is,,times change,,we work harder at doing what we do and am grateful for the talents I've developed and the opportunity to ply my trade...even if I'm not as busy as I'd like to be. It's up to me to think outside the box, focus a little more on my street rod t-shirt artwork and move on.

I don't think that it makes much sense to
throw verbal rocks at Wal-Mart or the guy with the bucks to start a biz competing with me.

I've never set foot inside a Wal Mart and never intend to do so. I patronoize small busnesses instead.

I want to see my money go to people who are struggling to survive, rather than a corporate bank account.

My feelings are similar to yours. I'm not casting stones either, but just stating a fact. For instance, the new Wal-Mart "Super Center" in a town about 35 miles from here pays their workers $5.50 per hour (supervisors get $6.00/hr), take it or leave it, because it's the so-called "prevailing wage" in that county. All the stuff a customer buys at that store does nothing to increase the wages of the workers. Only a few of the employees are even able to get full-time hours. That's the way the economy is, at least in northern Michigan. Manufacturing and the trades just aren't happening around here anymore. I guess I could add that there's not much work for musicians in this area either.

Mike, you make a very valid point: No matter what else happens, the big retail corporation gets rich, while their own workers struggle to survive. If a mom and dad were both employed at that Wal-Mart full-time, they'd have a mighty tough time making enough money to even pay household expenses and feed the kids. Needless to say, I never trade at that store either so, like you, I have no idea what music they play. What things I buy or services I use, I always try to patronize independent businesses where I'm appreciated and my money does some good for my fellow man. This is not about politics folks, just common sense and survival.

OK, I'm stepping down from my soapbox now.

I hear music at the supermarket, but wal-Mart is a madhouse I try to avoid. If they're playing music there, it sure never caught my attention. The place is too chaotic for me.

Wall Mart is now in Britain was in a Store in Livingstone near Glasgow no music of any kind if I remember rightly and not much on the shelves either. The place was so big I took pictures.

I try to avoid Wally World if I can. The lines are too long and there are Waaaay too many people there. I have tried to find some of the "old country" there on the shelves. No luck. Here in Columbus,Ohio, there is no "mom and pop's" except for a few independant music dealers. The thought of going to Sam Ash or Guitar Center repulses me. The pimple faced,supposedly depressed kid in the guitar department really don't know anything about music except for dropped D tuning and Nirvana. At least where I shop for musical stuff, the staff is fairly knowledgeable if I have any questions. Just my two cents

Everyone seems to be missing the point. Don't you think it's the least bit unusual to hear I'm No Stranger To The Rain in a mega store music track? That's an intense song. Not exactly a buying motivator. They're piping that music into stores that don't match the demographics, IMO. I certainly don't mind hearing it but wonder if I'm the only one who knows these songs.
