I just got a new PC based recording system, ProTools and Mbox. Here is my first recording using this system. I recorded this tune this past weekend. It's me playing the Sam Koki classic "Paradise Isle".

I am using Band In A Box for backup and I've added myself playing a uke track (recorded with microphone). I am playing my 1947 Bakelite Rick direct into the PC. I am using the software amplifier simulator "Amplitube".

The Rick sounds a bit "Fendery" on this recording. I still need to figure out how to get Amplitube to get a more "Rick" tone. I also need to learn how to mix and master.

Gerald,
Is there a problem with that file? I downloaded it and it seems terribly overdriven, my other files play correctly....is it a special format mp3? I'm using the file player in Win2K explorer, it plays fine with other files.
Thanks

I'm not sure what the problem was on my end, but re-saving in my workstation as an mp3 must have flipped a bit it wanted flipped....plays fine now....Great job Gerald, I liked it very much, on my third listen now as I'm typing

Jay

I downloaded the mp3 and it plays fine in RealAudio, MusicMatch and Windows Media Player.

I'm running Windows 2000 here (at work). I don't know what the problem is.

Nice Gerald! Very smooth...I like the transition into harmonics before going into the final verse...made me wish I was relaxing on waikiki beach. What tuning did you use?

Cool! Got it playing now in repeat mode infact.

Do you have the cord running from the jack on the guitar to the line in on the soundcard?

And when you mic'd the ukelele, did you have the mic going straight into the mic input on the sound card? Did you have to use an impedance match tranformer for going from a low-impedance mic to the high impedance computer input?

I hope to experiment with recording thru my system over Christmas break when I have some free time.

Thanks!

Jeff,
The Mbox is an external sound card/preamp that attaches to the PC via USB. It will only work with ProTools software. You plug your mics, guitars etc into the Mbox. Here is some info:

I used the "Mills Brothers" BIAB style. I mixed the drums part down quite a bit. This style is available in BIAB version 11 and above. Also available in this BIAB version is a "Freddy Green" style. Both of these styles are pretty close, but not 100%, to 1940's Waikiki Hawaiian rhythm backup.

Thanks to all for the kind words. I am having a lot of fun with this new recording system. I'm working on some more tunes.

Everyone should record themselves playing. It's a real eye opener. Things that you think sound great "live" many times do not translate well to a recording. Recording also reveals areas of your playing that can use improvement. It's a great learning tool.
