This is a lot of money. But does anyone on the forum have enough knowledge of the world of violins to determine if this is a ridiculous price, or simply the going market for a violin of this quality?
Just because a musical instrument is too expensive for one of us to buy doesn't mean it's a rip-off or a fool's purchase.
If there was a 1938 Martin OOO-45 guitar listed for $22,000, I'd wager that it might see some bidding action, for example.
Benny Thomasson, by the way, is one of the all-time legendary fiddlers in Texas music, along the lines of what Jerry Byrd, Leon McAuliffe, and Noel Boggs would be to steel guitar.

Right you are, Herb! It's entirely possible that without Benny Thomasson, there would not be a Mark O'Connor today. This fiddle belongs in somebody's Hall of Fame, IMO! |

Aside from the obvious value implied because of Benny Thomsson's ownership, Andreas Morelli is a highly repected violin maker. His copies of famous violins are sought after by players and collectors. I'm sure this Morelli copy of an Antonius Gagliano violin is faithful to the original which was probably made in the mid 1700's. Both Antonius and Gerraro Gagliano are among the all time greats of violin makers such as Amati, Stradivari, and Guarneri. A little side note: The recent film "The Red Violin" was based on actual events surrounding a Guarneri violin. Rare violins AND bows command incredibly high prices for buyers. Check this website for examples: http://www.prierviolins.com/fine.htm
Makes a rare Bigsby look like a once-in-a-lifetime bargin.
Keep on pickin'!

In other words, he's good but he's no Buddy Emmons.
