If you had to say what is Junior Brown's single most important vocal influence, who would it be? I used to think somebody else but I got a CD and now I think I know. Do you? BW |

Tennessee Ernie Ford.
Duh.....
(I only hear "ET" on a couple songs, and his "vocal patterning" is much more sophisticated than ET's)
"Hillbilly Hula Gal" in eg.
Caught that the first time I heard it.
Do I get a cookie?

Well, if it's not ET, then it's someone else, I reckon. |

My guess would be Red Simpson, but that's probably wrong since it seems so obvious. |

Dick Curless is right! I got this Cd: "The Drag em Off the Interstate Sock it To 'em Hits" I was struck by the similarity of his vocal moves to those of Junior Brown. This guy can really go LOW. He's got the big bass and he jumps up and croons with the best of 'em. I especially like "Bury the Bottle With Me" "Loser's Cocktail" and "Chick Inspector(That's Where my Money Goes) BW |

Dick Curless always was one of my absolute favorites, no matter if he sang those truck drivin' songs or ballads. His version of "Room Full Of Roses" always knocked me off (Weldon Myrick also played some incredible Steel on that one!)

Does anyone have the Dick Curless album, taped live at the "WWVA Wheeling Jamboree?" Curly Chalker took an instrumental break on a tune called "I'm Going To Move You To The Outskirts of Town." Dick was digging Curly so much, he lost his place and they left it on the recording.

Roger,
The Live at WWVA album is enclosed on the four CD Box "Hard, Hard Traveling Man" on Bear Family Records. This is a great set which includes the later Capitol records of Dick plus a full CD of home recordings he did just with his guitar.

IMHO, Junior is among that pantheon of singers, influenced by them but having his own style forged by years in the honkey tonks. A true original. |

I used to play with Junior(aka Jamie) Brown before his guit-steel/taco hat days in the early 80's, and I know for a fact that he was most influenced by Dave Dudley, Faron Young, Ray Price, and Earnest Tub....with a little Del Reeves and Webb Peirce thrown in for good measure.
He always was a dicking walktionary of country vocal styles. [This message was edited by Rick Schmidt on 03 February 2004 at 02:45 PM.] |

From the first time I heard a Junior brown song (It was a Dennis Payne written song Highway Patrol) I thought it was the late great Dick Curless. Great simularity here. Junior ought to cut "Tombstone every mile" along with my "shoes keep walking back to you". I use to ask Dick to do a Tom T Hall song everytime I would run into him called "I sleep late and miss a lot of trains". He would almost blow a PA speaker. (and has)
