I've got a friend who wants to buy her husband an MP3 player and needs some info in order to make her choice. I know nothing about these things, so I hope someone can help.
Here's what she's looking at, along with her questions. Any info regarding these players would be great, pros & cons, and other recommended devices would be highly appreciated. Thanks!!

1. Dell DJ Jukebox 20 GB for $249
2. iPod 20 GB for $399
3. iPod 40 GB for $499
I really do not want to spend $500 on a MP3 player. I know that 20 GB stores approx 5000 songs and the 40GB is double that. Do you really think he has 40 GB of music to store? (I don't think he needs 40GB - c.w.)
If not and the choice is between the Dell and iPod 20 GB models, do you think that the iPod brand is worth the extra $150 dollars? Supposedly, the Dell model has a battery life of 18 hours compared to the 8 hours of the iPod, but the battery is not replacable or something like that. |

I own an Archos mp3 player/recorded which I used at the last ISGC. The sound reproduction is phenomenal. I've also uploaded files to share on the net, again, great results. Retails about $250.00 and you get 20gb. I suppose you can find one on sale for $199.00 if you look hard enough.

Here's CNet's reviews of MP3 players sorted by rating. The iPod is the current target for everyone else to beat. I am getting one for my birthday courtesy my lovely wife, so I'll be able to give you my impressions soon.
I can say that the Dell and Rio players are nice, but the iPod is nicer. I agree that most people will be hard pressed to fill 40 Gb with their music. |

From a confessed Mac user, I've not seen an MP3 player whose use is as seamless, and capacity as limitless as the iPod. The sync feature with iTunes software is fantastic, it's very small, very light, and uses harddrive storage instead of flash memory... and if your pc has a firewire port, you can use your ipod as a hard drive to transport pretty hefty files from pc to pc. |

Hey guys, thanks a big bunch for all your replies.
Scott - that's an interesting option, and I'll pass it along (and file it away for my own future reference). I'm sure she hasn't even thought of that - neither did I.
