Been runnin' around, seen many a town.
So maybe you'll find I'm the kind of guy to brag.
But listen to me and see if you don't agree,
no melody rolls like that STEEL GUITAR RAG.

And when they slide that thing along the strings,
it sounds so dog-gone heavenly,
You hear the angels sing an' when you start your feet,
your heart will beat the rhythm to that STEEL GUITAR RAG.

You may be kinda choosy 'bout the kind of songs you hear.
You may like songs that's bluesy so you cry right in your beer.
But if you like a tune that's bound to drive away your care,
make happy your soul with that STEEL GUITAR RAG. There ya go Pat,From the lone praire steeler,Pat.

I attended one of Al Petty's Sunday worship services at Scotty's convention one year, and Al said that since he became a Christian, he didn't feel it was right for him to play Steel Guitar Rag, but he found a solution. He wrote a gospel song to the tune of Steel Guitar Rag. He sang and played it at the service.

Thanks for your responses. One step further, any ideas where I can get an audio of this also?

Hi Patrick,

I remember Tex Williams singing that song very well. I do have a question. I seem to recall that he said "stomp your feet" rather than "start your feet" in the seventh line. Am I incorrect?

Thanks for posting the words.

I have the Steel Guitar Rag, with words, on a CD by Meryl Travis. If I'm not mistaken, I believe Meryl wrote the words to the song. But then again, I might be mistaken.

I think Johnny Cash sings it on one of Robbie Turner's CD.

b0b sings!

and if you do consider buying the Quasar album, those who have been on the Forum since its beginning may recall Paul Franklin once said, b0b's recording of Sand is worth the price of the CD. FWIW I agree.

Before Leon got a hold of it,it was an old tune called "Buttermilk Rag" which probably dates back at least to the 20s. "Old Buttermilk Raaag - Old Buttermilk Raaag....." Exact same tune. A friend of mine in Tulsa has a 78 of it but I don't recall the artist.

The lyrics are credited to Cliffie Stone and Merle Travis and the melody to Leon McAulliffe. I have that Travis CD also which is a great one for sure.

I have Pee Wee Kings record and also Speedy Wests record, the words are the same cept Speedys has a vocal group on his. The flip side of Pee Wees is Tennessee Central #9. Did you play on the Pee Wee record, Roy Ayres? I heard it was either you or Don Davis.

C C,

I cant take credit for that great steel work on "Tennessee Central Number 9" or that particular cut of SGR. That was Don Davis, who preceeded me with the band. Pee Wee recorded SGR 3 times. I was his steel player longer than all the others combined, but I never played steel on one of the records. I did, however, have the honor of playing harmony parts on lead guitar with the fantastic Bobby Koefer on steel -- that was on the "Swing West" album.
