Hi folks,
I was listening to the oldies / standards AM station here in L.A. last night in the car and heard a song by a female vocalist with some great C6 style steel playing in it. The only lyrical refrain I could catch was "black coffee" --is that possibly the title?
Anyway the steel playing was great --very Emmons-ish-- and I was wondering if anyone out there had any song title / artist / steeler info about this recording.
Thanks!

Sounds like k.d. lang's recording of "Black Coffee" with Buddy Emmons on pedal steel. It's on her "Shadowland" CD. Visit http://www.kdlang.com/discography.html and click on the song to hear a RealAudio clip, just to make sure. |

I think Lacy J. Dalton had a good cut of that song as I recall....JH

Greg,
I don't know who is playing steel on it. but I don't think it's Buddy.[This message was edited by Bob Knight on 28 January 2004 at 12:42 PM.] |

If it's K.D. Lang's version that you heard, then it's Buddy Emmons on Black Coffee.
Hal Rugg is on 6 cuts, Buddy on the other 6.
Pick up the Shadowland album, it's well worth it.[This message was edited by David Cobb on 28 January 2004 at 02:39 PM.] |

"I'm Down to My Last Cigarette" is a great classic country sounding song on the Shadowland album also. I have heard Hal Rugg play it as an instrumental at the steel shows. I used to play it and this post reminds me to listen to it again and see if I remember how I played it. It was a "goodun" |

I agree George, I purchased the album on the strength of that one song. |
