Hi John!
What is the form of a sonota?
I want to write one for a classical violinist friend of mine.
Thanks in advance. |

Thanks B0b.
I may have bitten off more than I can chew,
but I'm going to take a run at it anyway.
What have I got to lose?
I'm thinking that If I borrow from
bluegrass and blues influences,
I might hit the ditch, and then again
maybe not.

From a bluegrass point of view, just think of it as ABA. |

Hi Andy,
I'm sorry I missed your post, I was away for a few days. Looks like b0b gave you a better answer than I could anyway.

It may be very useful before actually doing notes,
to lay out on paper and your instrument a chord grid to create your arpegios and harminizations from.
Once you have a logical form to build from this will go a long ways to how you build your lines.
Think of it like a roadmap with detours, or as a book outline.
I did a AABB AABB C AABB AABBD of T.O'Carolin's Morgan Megan for 17 instruments using this method.
Passing the melody and the harminizations around all the instuments.
I also suggest you get a book with the tranpositions and best used tonal ranges for the instruments as a guide.
Instrumental Arranging by Gary White or Jazz Arranging by Norman David are good, the former more clasically oriented. Both available at Amazon.com
Good luck |

Thanks a bunch guys.
It may tie my brain in a knot,
but it will give me something to do,
during this cold snap.
I also plan to get some recordings
from the library.
My relative pitch is pretty good. |

One book I found useful was " Sonata Forms"
by Charles Rosen from Norton Press.
Its pretty hard core stuff and might not make much sense outside of a conservatory environment though.
