In comparison to some of the other attempts I have seen on Ebay, this instrument is not as bad as you infer.
The nut is at least a bone blank that could easily be swapped out for any type of metal. The string spacing at the nut actually matches the bridge which is a Gibson style stop tailpiece and ABR1 copy. Looks like the fingerboard is a bit wider at the nut end. The ebony board is a nice touch. I don't know if it is a camera thing or not as even the wall behind the guitar seems to be wider at the upper section than down at the floor level.
All in all, I do not find this to be a negative instrument at all. I rather enjoy custom/hand made things that are different.
The only thing I can see that might be an issue is the headstock. One good tumble and I don't know if that design would be able to make it. |

Oh, I've seen far worse.....
My main concern would have been the pickup placement though (and the ugly 'headstock'), he string spacing is something one gets used to (I guess it's still wider than most 8-strings) and the nut could have been 'fixed' later.
But I like these kind of initiatives, I bought a 'Lapcaster' I found on eBay a while back, it had a really weird, almost cartoonish design, semi-hollowbody and with a 25" scale length. Didn't have the highest expectations, but it turned out to be the best blues/rock lap steel I've ever played!

Crow Bear:
Yes it's a funny little thing that Lapcaster.
One guy who heard the "A Stranger Here" track on my website claimed it sounded just as good as his Asher (!!). Now I've never tried an Asher so I can't comment on that, but I was completely blown away when I plugged it in. It sure sounds a whole lot better than the Chandler RH-2 I used to have.
The manufacterer and me has started talking about a 'SG' model, and one thing I'd like to add is an extra pickup, I wouldn't mind losing a couple of frets to have that.

Hey, I just checked out your website for the first time and yeah, that Lapcaster sounds pretty good! I really like "Waltzing Elisa" too, is that the Superior?

Thanks Travis!
The 'chord' guitar on "Waltzing Elisa" is the Superior, with the Sunrise p/u through my POD, while the melody is the Celtic Cross with the PUTW p/u direct.
The PUTW is so sensitive that it caught me sneezing (!!) so I fear it will be a real feedback trap in a live setting,- might end up with a Sunrise in the Celtic Cross too...

Thanks Scott!
To make matters even worse it's not even my guitar, but forumite Dwight Marks' Kona Weissenborn.....
PS - Sorry for hijacking your thread Iain.

Ah, good, I was pretty sure that the melody was the new Celtic Cross and not the Superior--that PUTW sounds awesome(and good choice to use the Sunrise guitar for the chord part, I love the bass sound that pickup gets). I like the sound of your new guitar quite a bit--it's very "Weissenborny," more so than some others I've heard. My friend Tim will be getting his Celtic Cross "weissenborn type guitar" at the end of November. Now more than ever I really can't wait.
Oh, and yeah, I guess this thread is good and hijacked, isn't it?
