Console height.

I have fabricated some legs for my Gibson Console, but had to use set legs (as opposed to adjustable legs) due to materials, cost, etc. I need to cut the legs to length, and have to decide on a generic height, taking into account that I may sell this guitar someday. What is the height from the floor to the top of the strings on your nearest neck? Thanks.

Tim,
I just so happen to have a Console Grande leg at my side at this very moment! I measured the leg and it is exactly 26" long from tip to tip. This is from a 3 legged Console Grande so don't know if it would be the same for a 4 legger.

The leg I measured is for the standard length legs that came with the Console Grande. They are non-adjustable. I think that maybe on the later models (the four legged ones), they had the adjustable legs.

Im 5 feet 9,I used to be 5 10 but I lost an
inch in a New York Subway

I prefer 28/1/2 inches give or take a 1/4 inch or so.Thats what comfortable for me.

When you age you shrink,keep that in mind. If the legs are too high? Get old fast.

Then you have it made in the shade.

When I stand, I set it up just bellow my belly button. I like it as level as I can get it, but I would rather have it leaning away than towards me, because of the angle at which your hands naturally lay.

However, it isn't quite the museum piece that it appeared to be on e-bay. But, after all, it was made in 1948 and I don't look as good as I used to either!!! I'll have to take some pictures and get them posted here.

My four legged blondie has the non adjustable legs which is a problem for me since I'm 6'4" tall. I can't use a volume pedal under the steel as there is not enough room for my knee to go up and down while rocking the pedal back and forth. I've found a guy here in Texas that makes adjustable steel guitar legs for some of the mfg'rs and he'll make some for me that have the 3/8" x 16 thread inserts required for the Gibson sockets. He wants ~$30 for each one. I'm going to order seven so I can have three extras for my Supro S-8 that didn't have the legs. The Supro hs the same socket as the Gibson.

Anyone want this guys name just email me. If we get enough of an order together it may bring the price down some. Who knows?

On my three legged blonde, it doesn't have screw-in sockets. There is a little peg that sticks out on the leg and once the leg is inserted in the socket, you just give it a little turn.

Tim, I have an "adjustable four legged" Console Grand, and I set it for what suits my playing level. I don't measure it, I just adjust it til it feels right. Someone else might like it up or down. I think it's only a personal decision.

For my steel heights, I always have the legs long enough so that the bottom of the body clears my knee by about 1/2”, {with my foot on a Volume-Pedal}. Any lower, and you'll have a problem. If the next owner needs it lower, he can cut them down, but; it's a little harder to make them longer! I would suggest making them slightly longer and then trim them down to fit.
