Sad Song of the Set
A little thing I do in my band The Skyliners is find an unbelievably sad song even by Country Music's standards to designate as the sad song of the set. So far I've been doing The Blizzard by Harlan Howard and The Old Timer by Jimmy Simpson.
I'm also considering When Daddy Lived In Houston by Johhny Bush. Any suggestions for other unbelievably sad songs that haven't been played to death?

Shaan, There are a couple to chose from off of Johnny Bush's 1967 album "Sound of a Heartache" (maybe my favorite album of all time). The one that immediately comes to mind is "You Ought to Hear Me Cry", which was written by Willie Nelson. "Lonely Street" would be another good one. There's also several real tear jerkers on Justin Trevino's new CD, "The Scene of the Crying". "She Didn't Color Daddy" being the saddest from the collection, with "Sound That a Breaking Heart Makes" and "Scene of the Crying" (written by our Forums own Dicky Overbey) being close behind. Dicky's steel playing on this album is enough to make you cry. Doesn't get ANY better!

I just so happen to have Sound Of A Heartache in my CD's that I brought to work today. I like doing An Eye For An Eye off that album. Speaking of Justin, my all time favorite song he's recorded is "Lord Forgive" on his first album it's sad but also scary as it hints at a forthcoming double homicide.
Thanks for the suggestions!

By the way, the song I do called The Old Timer is a lot like Parole Board:
The Warden shook his hand
and said your free to go my friend
Old Timer, all of us here wish you well
But the old man raised his head
and with haunting words he said
"Warden please just let me stay here in my cell...."

There has never been a song more guaranteed to elicit tears than Jim Reeves "The Tie That Binds"!......(and I'm not a JR fan).
