Went to see Doc Watson last night, and MAN!
Doc's 80 now, and has lost NOTHING on guitar, and I think his voice is stronger, and richer, than ever. And, one of the wonderful things about Doc live-he'll tell a loudmouth to shut up in a heartbeat!
Jack Lawrence did his usual incredible job, too.
Forget bombs, or WMD. Send Doc to ANY combat zone, let him play for thirty minutes, and the war would be over. Doc is a weapon of mass pacification.
Anyway, I love Doc Watson, and I feel sorry for anybody who don't. |

A good friend of mine visited Doc at his home near Deep Gap, North Carolina back in the late 60s. He pulled into the closest town and asked the general store owner where Doc lived. The guy said, "oh, you mean Arthel? (his friends don't call him Doc) Just down this road a piece". When he arrived Doc was alone, on his roof, re-roofing his house. As many of you may be aware, he's been totally blind since he was a young child. He treats it as more of an annoyance than a disability. That says a lot about Doc Watson.

Yeah, Larry, PBS did a special on Doc several years ago(musta been pledge week!), and they showed Doc working on the roof(two-story house), splitting wood, doing whatever was needed. Doc's quick to joke about his blindness, and does not wish to be called handicapped. And his ears are impeccable!
Did I mention, I love Doc Watson? |
