? regarding Paycheck & Little Darlin records

Post by GaryHoetker »

Man, what a voice and a singer of ballads. I, like many others, have the 20 set CD released several years ago. Wondering who owns the masters recorded in the 60's and if a box set might be released of his entire LD recordings in the future?

Aubrey Mayhew has the rights to the old masters, he was the part-owner and producer, A&R man, etc for the original label.

I reckon Aubrey is quite unlikely to issue a box set without intervention from another label, he basically leased the masters to Koch or whoever it was for the CD mentioned.
Some artists have been buying back their tracks from Aubrey and generally I think it would be up to a label like Ace, Bear Family or Koch (in other words not a US based outfit) to buy or lease the masters.

I imagine it will eventually happen in one form or another, but not anytime soon suspect.

Jason.
The masters to the sides I cut in 68 went to ITT Corp. When they bought out Little Darlin. Or at least that has always been my understanding.

I have the Paycheck record (which I think might be the one you're referring to) called "The Real Mr. Heartache; The Little Darlin' Years". I am not sure about this, but it looks like it has pretty much everything from Little Darlin' that Johnny Paycheck did, included unreleased cuts. It's fair to remember that Little Darlin' only existed from 1965 through the end of the sixties, so 20 sides in that time is pretty good... three albums were released, so this might be it? Anyone have any other info?
[This message was edited by Nicholas Dedring on 18 June 2003 at 09:47 AM.]

I have the following eight albums.

The Lovin Machine
Jukebox Charlie
Country Soul
Wherever You Are
JP at Carnegie Hall
JP Greatest Hits
Paycheck The Outlaw
Gospeltime In My Fashion
The CD has cuts from each of these albums, except Gospeltime, plus the unreleased songs.
I think this is the entire collection of "Little Darlin" albums.

Leigh, email me and I'll pass on the contact for who actually dealt with Aubrey and what they were told, etc... hence my post.
Might be of interest to you, I'm not saying it's otherwise to what you've been told, but it's off topic and I won't go into it here.

(I work for the Australian distributor for the aforementioned CD comp and don't wanna blab out of school, at least not on an archived forum)

As pointed out, the Cd really is a sampler, not the collected LD sides of Paycheck.
Besides there were other albums on the label and quite a few artists, the Black Bros. from California with Hoyet Henry, Leigh (as Lee Howell or something along those lines?), the Homesteaders and others.
Be nice to see a label comp, oh yeah.. didn't Lloyd have an album or two on the label?

He has one called "The Hit Sounds"- a great one. If he has another, I would like to purchase a copy from spmeone.
