Connie & Jean: The Best Female Vocalists

All the Shania's and Faith's, etc. can't come close to Connie Smith & Jean Shepard. These ladies know and can sing real country music. IMHO, they are the best female vocalists our industry has ever had. They have great bands that complement their vocals in an excellent manner. For all of us who love PSG, Dave Robbins & Johnny Cox do outstanding backup and dynamic, exciting breaks. I look forward to hopefully getting to hear Connie & Johnny and Jean & Dave each Friday & Saturday. If you enjoy true country music, it just dosen't get any better than Connie Smith & Jean Shepard!

You said a mouthfull there Butch & I agree with you 100%.
Mrs Smith grew up about 30 miles from here & I always loved her music, it just lended itself to the steel

I had the honor of playing steel for Jean at a show she performed here in Ohio about a year ago. What a great lady she is, she has a tone & quality in her voice that will never be duplicated.
One thing about Jean I noticed is she is partial to steel players

I must agree with the two choices made on this thread. I first heard Jean on Dear John with Ferlin Husky, and when I was in the service in 1964, I fell in love with Connie Smith when she hit the scene with Once A Day. My prize possessions are that I have pictures with both of these ladies, and I will not ever trade them for anything.

However, I must add to this thread a third woman singer who has passed away, and in my opinion, had been overlooked as a solo artist, and that is Anita Carter. Of all the Carter Family, hers was the greatest voice, not taking away from the legacy of the Family, but she was far and away the best singer of the family.

As a non-professional, meaning not one of the famous out of Nashville, I have another favorite, and her name is Beverly Rose, of the Rose Family Band, located in Minnesota. She is among the best female singers I have ever heard, and not just because she is a friend of mine, but because she is a real talented lady, who can sing with the rest of them. At one point, she and the Rose Family band has opened shows for both Connie and Jean at the Midwest Country Theater in Sandstone, Minnesota, and at one time, was invited to join Jean on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry. This has yet to be fulfilled, but given enough time, it may come to fruition.

Pardon me for touting my favorites here, but praise must be heaped upon those who deserve it.

Thanks to all the fine female singers that have graced our air waves: Jan Howard, Dolly Parton, Wanda Jackson, Rose Maddox, Donna Fargo, Jeanne Sealy, Kitty Wells, Loretta Lynn, Dawn Sears, Emmylou Harris, Heather Myles, Alison Krauss, and the list could go on.

Connie and Jean are legends because of their unique styles . Two of the best for sure...

Faith can sing a fine song and can look the part for the video's no doubt., Shania has found her nitch by writing and producing her own tunes..like them or not...maybe Faith and Shania have learned something from Connie and Jean...I am somewhat certain that they would agree about Connie and Jean.

I got to hear Connis Smith and talk to her a couple of weeks ago. She autographed an old 78 album that had Once A Day and some other big hits. She's always been my farorite also. Jenne Sealey is right next to her. I also got to talk with Johnny Cox. He's a super player and left me with the feeling that he's a super guy. He and Connie together make a great show, especially if you are a steel guitar nut.----Eddie Malray

Guys, don't get me wrong when I say that while Connie and Jean are great country singers, when it comes to real feeling put forth in a song, my choice is, and will always be Tammy. She could really drag a tear from my eye in nothing flat. Jim Miller I'D RATHER BE STEELIN'

I always loved Tammy, she was a great lady. I dont think George knew what he had with this lady.
My girlfriend is a dead ringer look alike of Tammy, What a lucky man I am
