Why don't you ask the steel players who did the CDs you want to give away for
them ?

Now, Bob, be nice. Perhaps they are recordings of his own playing on his own compositions? Benefit of the doubt, y'know...
(I sure as heck hope they're not my recordings! )[This message was edited by Jim Cohen on 17 December 2002 at 08:16 PM.] |

I say yes as well. Perhaps someone out there in infinite Netland will come across a Pedal Steel tune, download it and really like it. From there the person buys the CD, then shares it with friends and family, they all like it and go buy the CD, they share it with friends and family..and they like it and go buy the CD as well..etc.. etc...etc... and the next thing you know, Jim Cohen is #1 on the charts for a Steel Guitar song !
You see, I think that these NET downloads can
and should be used as a marketing tool. It's there and it's a free , why not try to use it to an advantage. I would not put an entire CD up there but maybe one or two songs of real popular titles. The way to do this is to put the peformers contact information in the song title tag somewhere so it appears on the information window of the song. The worst that will happen is "Nothing" .
Wah-dya make of that ?

No, the way to do it, in a small community like ours, is to contact the performer and ask his or her permission to do this with their music. Otherwise, the "worst that will happen" is ya get your ass sued and cause a rift within the steel guitar community. I don't disagree that this is a good marketing tool, and to be honest, I've used it myself a time or two, with my own music. But I sure wouldn't want someone else to decide what marketing tools I oughta be using and use them for me!
But, like I said, maybe Mr Smith was planning to do this with his own music? |

Jim..yes of course..with permission..But I think I was thinking more in the line of putting your own music up there, not someone elses..
"Tonight, here on Larry King, It's the new Steel Guitar pop chart( sounds like pop tart ) sensation, Tony Prior for the first half hour, and in the second half hour it's Trent Lott making yet another apology".
I suppose anythings possible...

Imagine that. Giving the control of what one does with the music to those who actually own the copyrights to it. What a novel concept. |
