I am looking at getting some new tuners for my acoustic guitar, and I am wondering what you all prefer. (I have in-line tuners right now, very cheap ones, and the chrome is starting to flake. Also, they grind if they are not oiled now and again, and I could see myself getting tired of that. )
I have Grovers on my Melobro, and love them, but I am wondering if they are a little big for guitar. I am also considering Gotoh, Schaller, and Spertzel.
Comments? Opinions? Advice?
Thanks, Lincoln |

Grovers are my favorites. On a second set on my old Taylor. I like them better than the stock Schallers on my Martin. They hold the tuning much better over time. I had bad luck with Gotoh's finish, the gold ones I had flaked badly. No experience with Spertzel but would think they might look a little out of place on an acoustic. |

If the guitar is worth spending the money on, I'd recommend Waverlys. They're about 150.00 a set, but they look good, and hold extremely well. Otherwise, mini-Grovers. |

My Taylors have Grovers. Plenty good. I think Martin and Taylor know what they are doing
Certainly shop around. |

Martin is using the Waverlys on the Vintage, Golden Era, and other limited edition guitars. Not trying to argue, but the Waverlys have a vintage look, that Grovers, Schallers, whatever, can't touch. IMHO [This message was edited by Stephen Gambrell on 17 December 2002 at 09:18 PM.] |

I'd go for the Grover's if you want value for your money. I purchased a used Yamaha acoustic electric a while back that the guy had put Waverly's on. They're great tuners for sure but I don't think they're worth what you have to pay for them. Grover also makes a model of tuner which looks like those old ones on the orchestra guitars in the big band days. They're very large and sort of a reverse pyramid looking profile.
