It was a popular Irish song back in the '40s. Jean Simmons sang it in the movie "Way to the Stars", which came out right after WWII.

Colin, I was living in Ireland in the '40s and can confirm that Donny is 100% right.The song was sung by many Irish singers of that period, and almost certainly by Delia Murphy, who was the No.1 Irish ballad singer at that time.
