Topic: what is a Shindig ? |

Could someone tell me the origin of a Shindig and what it pertains to ?
is it a Country affair or does it englobe other styles of Musik ?

| In effect, the term "shindig" just means a large party, or dance. There is no association with any specific type of music. Country folk might call a square dance a "shindig". And back in the '60's, we even had a TV show called "Shindig". That show featured teen-age rock music. |

Funny - this, as I used to play in a band called Shindig.
Acording to the dictionary it's a noisy party, dance, ans is another word for "shinty".
I always thought it to date back a little further apertaining to Shanty or public house i.e. meeting place where people would get together and play/sing.

And the "house band" on Shindig was The Shindogs, with James Burton on lead guitar, Delaney Bramlett on bass, Glenn D. Hardin on pno, Chuck Blackwell on drms and Joey Cooper on gtr. Some of the other stars were:
Pam Freeman - Shindig dancer
Teri Garr - dancer (Sept. - Oct. 1964)
Maria Ghava (a.k.a. Gahva, Gavha) - Shindig dancer, singer
Jack Good - co-host & producer (through June 1965)
Fanita James - singer (The Blossoms)
Kirby Johnson - singer (The Wellingtons)
Jean King - singer (The Blossoms)
Donna Loren - singer
Darlene Love - singer (The Blossoms)
Anita Mann - dancer
Jimmy O'Neill - Shindig host
George Patterson - singer (The Wellingtons)
Carole Shelyne - dancer (with large glasses)
Bobby Sherman - Singer

Yay chas!... cool listing.
Bramlett, Hardin and Burton had all worked as part of the Gene Davis Band at the Palomino Club prior to the Shindig! gig.
Other musicians involved in Shindig! TV show were Leon Russell, Jim Gordon, Jim Horn, Jerry Cole and others. The main group that Chas mentioned was sometimes augmented by these guys, while Leon and Jim Gordon were the first dudes hire onto the show. Jim Gordon sort of went off into the studios and later was with Delaney & Bonnie, Joe Cocker etc.
Leon Russell actually performed on the show here and there, but was more active as the arranger for the band and orchestra parts of the show.
I always assumed it was an English term for a musical party, after all the guy who brought the show together was Jack Good, and Englishman in Los Angeles.

| I always thought a shindig was where a bunch of good ol' boys (and gals) got together to eat barbeque, brunswick stew, cornbread, coleslaw, boiled potatos, and iced tea, with a little bit of pickin' and grinnin' goin' on as well -- 'course, I could be wrong. |

Geeze Chas !! Incredible ! Did you work for or on the show as well ?, Where did your intense knowledge come from ?, Certainly not the TV guide listing ! Do you know what brand of tubes were in James Burtons' amp ?

I also saw the Righteous Brothers on that show, although maybe they were only guests that week. they sang "She's not there."
a zombies or Kinks tune. That was just at the beginning of the show.It was in a medley.

| As some may know,I worked with Leon for about 5 years in the late 70s-early 80s and he has some video footage I've not seen on the Shindig compilations.Among other things,I remember seeing a clip of a young pompadored,clean shaven Leon banging out "Roll Over Beethoven" w/a bust of Beethoven sitting on the piano.He also appeared in the 60s rock concert movie "The Tami Show" playing piano in Jack Nitche's band.I found that out one time when I asked him if he'd ever seen that film....duh... -MJ- |
