This is for some of you forumites that a little long in the tooth like your's truly.
What can you tell me of Carl Smith since the last I heard of him was in the 50's? He was one of my favorites and always used a lot of steel. I understand he retired and went to full time ranching but I would like to "hear the rest of the story", please!

I heard that Carl was up in Canada somewhere, but perhaps Don Walters or Al Brisco may know.
You may have missed the ISGC a couple of years ago when Johnny Siebert - one of the steelers he used was inducted into the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame. I have a small video of him some years back when he was playing a D10 Emmons. That was some time after he used a Triple Neck Fender on the recordings with Carl.
I don't know the name of the album, but if it was recorded in the 1966-69 period you can bet it's on Columbia and has "Deep Water" and "I love You Because" on it. Two terrific versions of two terrific songs IMHO. But then, I like just about everything Carl Smith ever recorded. And he has always had a cool persona too. How about it Jason Odd?
Erv, Carl and Goldie's horse farm is in the outskirts of Franklin Tn. Yes he retired sometime in the '70's.
Tim, the album you are referring to is the "I Love You Because" album on Columbia. He had another album called"25th Anniversary" I think was the name of it that had Chalker on some of it and Big Jim Murphy on the rest.
BTW send your opinion ti the CMA because Carl is nomminated for the Hall Of Fame this year. I think it's long overdue.
Does Carl Smith do any entertaining these days? It sure would be good to see him again. He always had a lot of stage presence and vitality to his singing. Wasn't he married to June Carter at one time?

Yep, and Carlene (Carter) is his daughter. Last I heard of him was a duet he did with her (Carlene) on one of her 90s albums (Little Love Letters, maybe?)

Can anyone tell me if any of the stuff with Chalker is on CD? There's a great compilation of the earlier stuff with Johnny Siebert on Columbia ("The Essential Carl Smith"). And then there are two budget "Best of's" available that I know of; one on Federal and one on Curb, does anyone know if they have Chalker on them? Goldie Hill is the sister of legendary producer/picker Tommy Hill. She was the hottest looking babe in Nashville in the 50's <font size=1>IMHO</font>, and Tommy allows as how she's still pretty fine looking!
I know Bush was gonna ask Carl Smith to appear on last week's Midnite Jamboree, but JB told me that Carl is pretty much fully retired from singing.
Well I fall into the class of gettng long in the tooth so here is my Carl Smith story. A few years ago my son, Greg Jones, had taken me with him to Lebanon, Tn to one of Newmans jam sessions. We were staying in a motel in Lebanon and was going to breakfast before we went to the Jam.
When we arrived at the parking lot I saw this fancy red rig pulling a long horse trailer. No name on the side of it but it surely did catch your eye.
While we were having coffee waiting for our order to come I was looking around. I asked Greg and a friend that was with us if they knew who was sitting at the next table behind them. Naturally they did not, I said its Carl Smith. they say,"how do you know".
It was easy, although his hair was gray, like most of us, it was still combed the same and still slender as he was of years ago.
Marty couldn't believe it was him so he gets up and takes a stroll around the breakfast bar and comes back with a grin "Yep thats him, how did you know"?
It was really easy from the hair and the ears (no disrespect ) but only Carl looked that way. There were some other people with him but I didn't see anyone that looked like Goldie and we didn't bother him.
I sure did enjoy a lot of his songs and for those of you that are Carl Smith fans check out Big Bobs Barndance on page 2 at Live365.com. He gets a lot of airplay there as well as Webb , Hank, Lefty and a lot of other guys from that era.
Big Bobs Barndance is from Delmore, Oklahoma and you will get a kick out of how he signs on. In a slow easy drawl he tells you that you won't hear Shnia Twain, You won;t hear Garth Brooks, Etc, you get the idea.
I always log onto 365 at Emmons84, Unsung Heros or Big Bobs Barndance, give it a listen, I think you will like it.
Gene and Jim: He had to be meaning Carl Smith since Johnny Siebert was inducted into the SGHOF in 1998. I think the JS sound was as much a goal of mine as was Jerry Byrd or Lil' Roy Wiggins. In fact I still see JB as C6th; Lil' Roy as EM and JS as A6th. Just impressions from my early days.
