If we're talking country music ... "Friends In Low Places" by Garth & "Achy Breaky Heart" by Billy Ray Cyrus. Terrible (And of course, they both sold millions). Image

For a steel guitarist in the south it's gotta be "Gimmie Three Steps" & "Sweet Home Alabama." We never go one night without having to do both these songs and I hate them almost as bad as that song that goes...."we fired our rifles and the British kept a comin'."

I don't like "Elvira" but I really hate "Hang on Sloopy".

"Boot Scoot Boogie" self-consciously plunged us into the hellish abyss of the line dance. Talk about hateful!

It's got to be "Achey Breaky Heart".

Too bad that it's Billy Ray's signature song.

I heard him once in concert, and I'd forgotten that he really has some good tunes.

All because of that ONE!

There was one country song that was SO terrible that the producers took out the words and played it regularly as an instrumental. Anybody remember it? The theme song from "Bonanza."

I read the lyrics and tried singing them along with the song, and I wanted to shoot MYSELF!!

I play bass as well as PSG,and the jazz quartet I play with was given a chart to play by the brides mother at a wedding gig we had a few years ago. This THING she wanted to hear was called "The Abba Dabba Honeymoon". All of the guests were singing this thing. Everything mentioned in this post so far can't compare to the nausea I endured while playing that work of art! YYYYYYYYYYYYYUCK! I can still taste it!!!!!!!!!

I have to go with "Gimme One Reason" and "Steam" and I'm sick of the "Play SOME ROCK AND ROLL!!!" Screamers at TX Dance Halls. I threaten to quit everytime I have to play "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Old Time R & R". I actually walked off of one gig and never went back because of "Sweet Home Alabama". That stuff may work in the rest of the USA, but once your down in TEXAS.....

Most times I can get thru a particularly annoying song on a gig by repeating to myself "it's just another sequence of notes in space and time" and trying to ignore the lyric content. Other times if faced with having to play something like, oh, "Achey Breaky Heart" fer instance, I will find a musical quote to play that will take the edge off; I found that "Baby Elephant Walk" fit very nicely over the Achey Breakey progression ('if it don't fit force it' is my motto), and was very appropriate for the 300+ lb line dancers who requested such...

having control of the radio dial is another issue...most times I have a few stations I can rely on to NOT play crap, but if I get blindsided by "Who Let The Dogs Out" or that damn song by Train "Drops of Jupiter" comes on I exercise my wrist...

Don't get me wrong, I think The Hag is one of the greatest, but I CAN'T STAND "Misery and Gin". It may be a great song but it makes me wanna get violent...and of course every band that plays it soooo sloooowwww, and then accents the bejabbers out the chord rundown from the 4 to the 2, "Blam-blam-blam-Blam!" The kinda bands that do the same ridiculous accents in "Crazy", man, I really HATE that!!! Other than that, I'm a pretty mellow guy.

"Devil Went Down To Georgia" and "Crazy"

I know there are others, but these come to mind real quick.

Billy Idol's 80's rendition of "Mony Mony". On the country side I can't stand listening to " 18 wheels and a dozen roses" by Kathy Matea I think?!

This old dude that runs our dance gets up and sings a song about "Mrs. Johnson"...something about 'me and the good Lord gonna have us a good talk...or something like that.

Man I hate that guy! Oh yeah and the song he rode in on.
