I was watching TV at the usually unknown hour of 6 AM this morning and there was a story about Dale Watson on. I've seen posts about him on the forum but I wasn't familiar with his music, I instantly became a fan.
Where can I get any recordings of his?

Don't know about that but aren't Dale and Ricky Davis, brothers separated at birth? That's why they work so good together.

I don't think Gene and Dale are related. I've been telling people that I just bought new CD's "…by Dale Watson, Alan Jackson, Gene Watson -- no relation". For sure, they're musical kinsmen -- both featuring hard country with plenty of great steel guitar; the stuff that country radio ignores these days.

I've got 4 of Dale's CDs. One I bought from him and had autographed. Two were gifts and the other I bought from Amazon.com. I have seen them in record shops from time to time.

The CD's I have:

Cheatin' Heart Attack
Blessed or Damned
I Hate These Songs
Every Song I Write Is For You.

I think those are in chronological order. Each CD has about 14 solid country songs, most of which were written by Dale. I highly recommend all of these. Dale is certainly on my short list of favorites. I rave about his music every chance I get. The icing on the cake is that fellow forumites Ricky Davis and Herb Steiner play steel on some of the cuts.

Like Haggard, Dale has written much of his life into his songs. His latest, Every Song I Write Is For You, tells of his personal grieving and healing from the devastating loss of his fiancée in an auto accident.

These are emotionally charged songs of the real-life pain he's enduring. I've loaned my copy to a recent widow friend-- with an appropriate introduction. I have another friend in mind for it as well, and I'm hoping that yet a 3RD prospect sees her husband recover from widespread cancer. I can't say anything that they could relate to better than Dale's songs, as he no doubt knows their pain 1st hand.

You have to have "Preachin To The Choir". This two-CD set was recorded live in Europe and is a must have. Ricky does some fantastic pickin on this one.

Ben, Dale is plain 'Great'. He's nice guy, plays his bum off, and writes real good classic songs. Ricky Davis and him play with some kind of telepathy, 'brothers-from- another-mother' is more like it. I have seen them 4 times and the last being in Austin at SXSW and stood right on stage over Ricky's shoulder. They do some neat songs too, and the crowd is very diverse.
Other Cd's to get are:
'The Truckin Sessions'
'Christmas Time in Texas'
'People I've known, Places I've been'
Dale reads the Forum alot, and if he's reading now, Hey Dale, keep up the great work!!! and get back to the NY Metropolitan area real soon.

I'm not recomending the new Hightone reissue.
It's worth it to buy all 3 of the original
Hightone issues as the reissue is missing
"South Of Roundrock Texas" and "A Real Country Song". I will admit I don't have
"Preachin To the Choir" yet

The Truckin Sessions set is a personal fave, but I was constantly listening to it and when Dale came out in '99 he played 'Flat Tire" just for me... (at least in my mind he did)

I picked w/Dale for a while a number of years ago and even did a little road doggin' as well in 1990. Yeah - he's the real deal and that's rare these days.
Of course he's kinda crazed - but that comes with bein' the real deal....

UGH. I detest George W. Bush. I look into his eyes and I see evil. He wanted to be king so badly and now he IS the King.

However, he does have one redeeming quality.... he likes DALE WATSON.... so he isn't 100 percent bad!!! Hee hee.

Watson is the REAL DEAL. Yee Haw!!

I'm working on getting all of Dale's music.I mentioned Dale to my band leader, who is from Texas, and he would like to start covering some of Dale's tunes. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery

Hey Ben; I've showed this post to Dale Watson and he is following it and also would love and be very "Flattered" for you to cover his songs.
Dale wanted me to tell all ya'll he is just overwhelmed of the kind words that are said here....it really is inspiring to him...and thinks this is just the coolest thing going..."the steel guitar forum" that is.

Dan: I think you meant to indicate two separate songs there.

"Caught" and "Country My Ass".

While at a Super Bowl party, I'll retrieve the "Every Song I Write" CD from our widow friend. Today would have been her late husband's birthday. She listened to the CD and commented to my wife, "You can sure tell he knows what he's singing about. He's lived it".

Sort of like another of my favorite singer/songwriters.

Ricky - my cousin Brady living in London really enjoyed getting to see Dale and you at the Borderline back in in October, he was home over the holidays and he told me about sending a drink up to Dale and he read from the bar napkin in the middle of a song - "Neil from Nebraska?!!... are you really in here??!!!" - I'd given Brady the pitch to go catch you guys while you were there in the UK and he was sure glad he did - chalk up another big fan of DW and the LoneStars!

Hey, from the website, looks like you guys are sticking pretty close to home for the next several months - the Hill Country sure is a great place to "winter", but hope you'll be roading it north as it warms up??!
