I don't see anything listed that would be a good candidate, other than what is already an Opry member.
Hal Ketchum has one hit and he's made a member, someone like Gene Watson is still waiting. Had to be some politics or payola somewhere. |

Guy Clark is actually very popular with the folk music crowd. He's the guy who recorded "Home Grown Tomatoes" and he can be very interesting to listen to in a live setting. He's got a story to go along with each song, etc. My supervisor at work repeatedly tells me that Guy Clark is her favorite entertainer.

Guy, IMNSHO, is one of the best writers to come out of Texas, second only to the late Townes Van Zant.

To the question "does Guy Clark play traditional or new wave country?" the answer is "probably more traditional than many of you would care for..."
He's essentially an acoustic country artist (like Doc Watson, for example) and above all a writer. "Desperados Waiting For A Train" recorded by Jerry Jeff, David Allan Coe, Johnny Cash, and even Slim Pickens (the Western actor). "Heartbroke" which I seem to remember was a hit by Ricky Skaggs.
Guy doesn't use steel guitar that I'm aware of (dobro, sometimes) but anyone who lets that prejudice stop him watching is missing something!!
Anyone know WHY or HOW COME Guy is appearing on the Opry? The Emmylou connection, maybe?
(P.S. Guy's wife, Susanna, has also written some great songs...)

As far as national entertainment value Guy Clark will either be over everyones heads that are not familiar with him,and turned off by those as myself that are. Good & talented writer but vocal talent 0. Sad that this is the best the OPry can drum up for a spotlighted show.

With a prayer of not getting flamed too bad, I like BR549 (the hyphen's been dropped), because they don't sound like any other artists. They do their own thing. That's the problem today. One artist gets a hit and all the other labels are falling over each other trying to find a sound and a look-a-like. Kind of like when one twangs, we all twang. (no disrespect intended)

| OK! It surprised me, I liked it tonight. I would like to say first that forum member Stu Basore did a fantastic job sitting in for Tommy tonight. Stu is a wonderful player and an equally wonderful person and he did great tonight. Hal did good but who ever told him he could host? He can't say shit with a mouth full but he had a steel player in his band! BR549 proved Jack Stoner wrong! They were a breath of fresh air from almost out of the past and I don't give a damn how they dress, they are good! I was glad that Guy Clark called on his friends to help him with his song. He did OK but I was glad to see Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. I like them both but someone needs to tell her about Playtex padded bra's. That poor girl is flatter than I am. Jack Green did good with Stu behind him making him sound good. Hey, I called this one wrong in my first post and I'm glad I was. It was a great show tonight. Theresa, you will have to finish this up as I am playing my Zoom bassoon for "Free Beer" tonight at another lowly shit hole. Only $65 tonight but it will keep me out of trouble. Well, gotta go change my reeds! |

What a balence of acts.
My raves are particuarly about BR549. Theresa(?) the camera shots were amazing. i liked how Donnie was playing 2 different necks.
Sorry to hear Lorretta lynn is under the weather.
I know you guys would rather hear steel behind Blue Kentucky Girl.
Even Hal Ketchem was decent

I agree the camera work was the best in along time tonight on BR549's steel man.Also, for the band to mention steel in the interview was great!

MW says Ketchum cant host worth sh** & JB says he did a great job hosting!Actually! as a steel player & Steel Guitar Forum member, I watch to hear rhe steel, Until Jack Greene came on, It was the worst mess since the Chris C.& LeRoy P. crap! I've watched & listened to the Opry since Hal & Weldon made it enjoyable! Go Figure !!!! Stu! You did great! Tommy! where are you? & you too Dave Robbins! HELP!
