Okay, now I'm trying to track down some info (as much as possible) on Northern CA bandleader Black Jack Wayne who passed away circa 2000.
through the 1950s, 1960s and possibly into the 1980s he led the Rovin Gamblers (for a time billed as Capitol Recording Band, notably as they backed Rose Maddox on most of her early Capitol sessions).
John Lee Newman is the lead guitarist on many sessions. He was in Black Jack's band the Rovin Gamblers. He was known as Lee Newman, but more commonly known as Roy Hammer. Billy Hodges is listed as the drummer on some of the Maddox sessions, but he was primarily Black Jack's lead guitarist. Hodges is Black Jack's nephew, and was later known as Billy Joe Tucker.
Black Jack and his younger brother Chuck Wayne had been active since the 1940s, Chuck recorded a variety of solo singles in the 1950s as well.
Black Jack also worked on radio and had a television show circa 1960-1961... the latest I know of his recordings would be a song was done by Black Jack on Big West label in '64.
Does anyone out there have more info on these guys?

| Jason, Black Jack Wayne had a local T.V. Show in the early sixties. It was on Saturday Nights on KTVU channel 2 out of Oakland, CA. Tom Bradshaw could probably answer alot of your questions. Black Jack Wayne passed away in June 1999 in Fort Bragg CA. His brother Chuck lives in Tracy CA.
Apparently there was nothing in the San Francisco or Oakland papers when Black Jack passed, but I have heard there was an article in the Fort Bragg paper. |

I played a little bit with Chuck Wayne back in the 70's and 80's. He lived here in Fremont. I played for years with his son Charlie Wayne. They now live in Tracy, California. I believe Chuck, as well as his wife Johnny, is still alive. These are great people.
As far as nicknames, the "Wayne" part of the name is actually their middle names. Their last name is actually Shults.

Yeah, I'd actually forgotten that.
I did read it somewhere, I do have a copy of a very small article on Chuck and it mentioned his last name and that he first started performing around 1949.
I used to have a greatr promo pic of Black Jack, but just cannot find it anymore.
