John,
I agree, that was a good show. I'm looking forward to this one as well because of Jimmy C. Newman. I don't particularly like his singing but Dan Drilling his guitar player knocks me out. He's one cool player with the compressed Tele drivin' sound which I like. Do you think the old man would like his tone?

Jerry,

I worked with "Dan Drilling" for a number of years here in a club. Dan is a great guitar player and one of those few people with "ice water" for blood. Nothing "shakes" him, with exception to doing 10 "shuffles" in a row! Outside of that, he pretty well excepts any challenge. Afterall, playing "Cajun" music for a living has got to be a challenge. LOL

No body plays Jimmy C's gig better than Dan.

Dave, I totally agree with you on Dan Drilling. I always enjoyed working with Dan. He is such an intense player. He is so focused in on what he's doing, it is amazing. Does Jay Shupe still work for Mel McDaniel? Jay is a real fine player.

Bob,
yes to my knowledge, Jay does still work for Mel, or at least did the last time I saw him, which was at the Opry a few weeks ago.

And yes, Dan is "intense!" Also, nobody plays "triplets" better than Dan (that is Dan and my little inside joke). ImageDan is a great guy and greatpicker. Ask him about his "No Shuffles" sign when you see him.

Bob, sorry I missed ya at the Opry! You guys have one really great band!

I enjoyed the Opry tonight. Had some good all around pickin! And featured the steel quite a bit. So, now there moving to CMT.Well, I'm gonna think positive, and hope it works out good over there! I wont miss Back Stage too much because the new format with Pam tillis was'nt doing it for me anyway.

Nice to see Leon Rhodes picking with Porter and Billy Johnson got some nice Guitar solo time. Fred Newell (one of Nashvilles best Guitarmen)on Steel did a good job on just someone I use to know. All in all it wasn't a bad "get the hell off TNN night. Image

Was that Billy or Fred on that bright red steel with blue frets? The new format will cut back on the trivel things like Jan Howard asking Charlie Louvin if she could sing that Bill Anderson song.

Bill Anderson was saying that backstage show
goes back pre TNN to 1979. I can remember watching it from Allentown Pa along with programs from Churchville Station in Orlando.

The opry was exceptionally good tonight. I think Dale and Ricky kind of spurred them on after last week. It sure brought back some old memories too, seeing Buck Trent back onstage with Porter.( I won't mention what he plays tho!) Hope the expanded version on CMT will be an improvement.

As far as them living up to last weeks show? Jay Shupe, [with Mel McDaniel] sure made that a "Piece of Cake!" I just wanted to give credit, where credits due! kr

Fred Newell did a great job! He wrote the instrumental used at the end of the televised portion. It was a good steel based tune.

Does this ever happen to you??? We always listen to WSM on the road, and it seems everytime Dan takes a lead break, or something really exciting is happening on the show, we go under a power line and lose the signal. That irritates me!!!
BTW, Janice, how did you get the nickname, "busgal"?

I printed this thread out and took it to the Palace last night because Dan Drilling works with us every Sun. night. He was flattered by the kind words and says thanks. Dan is a great player and a great guy too. If anyone is in Nashville on a Sun. night come to the Nashville Palace and you can hear him on stuff other than Cajun music. Take care, Mike Sweeney

Mike Sweeney, How dare you take off on a night I decide to stop and see you. On 8/4/01, after we did the Opry, I got off the bus at the Nashville Palace. We were staying at the Best Western on Music Valley Dr. I went in, and low and behold; Bobbe Seymour was subbing for you. I really enjoyed seeing and visiting with Bobbe. He has bee a friend for 30+ years. Sorry I missed you. I'll try and catch you next time around. Image Image Image
