Lotta discussion about Mr Randolph on the PSG side. This from RESOGUIT-L:

"For those of you that are fans of steel guitar, i highly recommend the "sacred steel" of Robert Randolph's new album "Unclassified" - on the credits, it says that Robert plays a Beard dobro on "smile" - a lovely, lovely tune."

Anyone heard this? Wonder what tuning he's using.

He was in Seattle Sunday playing "accoustic". I could not get there but was surprised that he played this style.

It's doubly surprising because most of the other performers were hip-hoppers ... not exactly the kind of concert where you would expect a dobro!

They have been playing his stuff on KPIG here, I heard a cut called "Squeeze", it was terrifying. Bass player is also very amazing. I'd like to know his tunings as well.

You will find the tuning he uses for his custom Sierra 13-string pedal steel here: http://www.sierrasteelguitar.com/aphotos/rrandolph/scm-13sg.html

He's playing in A. The pull-offs and hammers at the end of the piece seem to indicate he is in std. 1-3-5-1-3-5 Dobro tuning. He could be using a capo or just be tuned to open A. The bright timbre makes me suspect the latter, but that could just be EQ on the recording.

Those extended, slurred voice-like passages played on one or two strings way up the neck are classic House of God stuff. If you are attracted to that sound, you might want to check out Aubrey Ghent's record on Arhoolie--or Darick or Chuck Campbell for that matter.

Just about all the House of God steelers have a lot of experience on std. Dobro tuning. It's the most common tuning they use on six-string laps, which is where most of them (including RR) started.
