Well, that sucks. Can you say "payola"? Sure ya can.
How hard would it be for the record companies to simply STOP spending advertising dollars with the radio stations? What would radio then do? Convert to a completely different format?

Radio is out
TV is out
If you don't have net access or good contacts you will never know about good new music.

The whole marketing system that evolved is ass-backwords. We think that music is being played and displayed in stores because it is popular, but the truth is that the manufacturers buy the air time and the shelf space. Selling anything to the American public requires a lot of money.
This really has nothing to do with music. All products compete for visibility in the store and in the media, and the only way to get visibility is to pay for it. Record company executives could just as easily be working for Nike or General Motors - their job description would be the same.
Busgal was right on. If you're really interested in music, just ignore the media hype. It's irrelevant.

I only buy music online now. You can check many sources at one time and find what you're looking for... as well as discover new artists. |
