What's the deal with LeAnn Rimes?

Post by RJP »

It seems that girl is on the fast track to oblivion. When I heard "Blue" for the first time I was impressed with her voice. I thought for sure I was witnessing the next queen of country music.

Then everything started falling apart. She started doing all that pop stuff and now she's embroiled in legal disputes with her father AND her record company!!! If I heard correctly, she was trying to stop the release of her latest CD because she was unhappy with the deal her folks signed for her. I hope I have the story right. All this can do is ruin her PR and relegate her to VH1's "Where Are They Now?" file.

I hope she returns to her senses before she becomes a has-been by age 21.

Ron, I agree. "Too much---too soon" has ruined hundreds of potential lifetime careers. I couldn't believe that after the success of "Blue", that the suits would choose to ignore it, and make her just another "generic" Country-Pop star. I often wonder how many of the "forgotten" stars of the past 20 years would still be around...if only they had not changed their styles to try and capture a "bigger audience".

When I heard her being interviewed on TNN a few yrs ago, she was asked who her favorite artist was, When she said "Prince" I knew she was in trouble. kr

Once again-to sell the kind of numbers you have to sell to keep making records, you have to cross over to the pop charts at some point, or go to a regional label as a niche act.

From what I have read, in the paper and on this forum from folks who seem to know what they're talking about, the suit against her father has some pretty serious merit. Most of her contracts were signed with her dad's cronies, and call for her to get almost nothing, while he and his buddies got the lion's share of the profits. The reason the label is backing off is that there's a pretty good chance she's going to win and they're going to have to renegotiate.

I saw an article in a newspaper that she wants to be the next POP Diva! She obviously has no desire to continue singing "country" and who knows, maybe her parents pushed her in the country direction and she did it but really didn't like it.

I heard a story, through the "grapevine" that Eddy Arnold was booked on a show, one time,& the promoter announced him as,"The Tennessee Plowboy",(which he was known as,in the beginning of his career),& Eddy REFUSED to come on.
BTW Jack,RE:"pop diva"
She's gonna hafta fight Britney Spears for that title!

Thing is, she can't even come close to the vocal acrobatics displayed by Mariah Carey.....neither can Whitney Houston for that matter. You may like so and so's voice better, or this one's style or that one looks etc.. but none of them have the control, range or ability vocally that Mariah does. Then again, Diva is kind of like a C&W superstar......seems it hasn't got a whole lot to do with how well you sing....the SHOW must go on. Rod

Eddy Arnold had some success in the "pop" field but he may have been a lot more successful if he would have stayed in the country field.

When I worked for Little Roy, he and Eddy were still close friends and both lived in Franklin, Tn but Little Roy said Eddy didn't want to have anything to do with "those Hillbilly's at the Opry". Everyone in town, except Eddy, agreed that Roy's sound made Eddy Arnold.

Guys, she's going to make a $h!tload of money, and that's about it.
There's plenty of room for blondie pop singers and anyone going to see the film Coyote Ugly (don't ask it's bad) will most likely buy a copy of the single as it's totally aimed at teenagers who lurve this sort of thing.

Mariah and Whtney, oh they are selling, but their days are numbered now.
I figure LeAnn's part of the pop future, middle of the road stuff, a little too sophisticated for the Britney kids, but she'll do okay.
After all Reba, Barbara Mandrell and Shaniah Twain have walked this crossover path to different degrees and all made money as pop singers after country hits.
You want country, try Patty Booker and Kasey Chambers.

I don't know about you guys, but I have a big problem with a girl her age running her hands all over herself in her "pop country" video. She probably needs to be a little older before I can enjoy it!!!

I haven't seen the video, but I believe she's older than both Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, who do a lot of that kind of thing.

Sounds like someone who "crossed over" and then forgot where he came from!

I don't think she can convince the industry that she is a pop singer... at least beyond middle of the road.

Man, we are talking about little pop singer chicks..and the scary thing is, I'm only 30, yet I'm twice the age of some top #40 female singers!!

Of course Britney Spears and LeAnne fighting out the title..'ahem' raises all sorts of fine cat fight imagery with me, but let's not go there!

I nearly forgot to mention this.. LeAnne is actually in the pop charts right now with that single from the stanky Coyote Ugly film, but that's no big deal.
In this country we can have horrible middle of the road hacks, techno, Abba, geek rockers like Ween and sports comedy albums in the CD charts.. weird place.

Wasn't she pitted against Britany on Celebrity Death Match? Seems to me that she lost...

Sorry guys, my last post was a little strange. That's what you get for four hours of sleep in two days.. lucky I didn't go off on a mud wrestling tangent.

I remember seeing a promo for Coyote Ugly not long ago and I thought that the chick singing on the bar looked a lot like LeAnne Rimes, but I must admit I was suprised when I saw the rows of singles in a Sanity (Music) Store in the city.. it was her.

While you're trashing her, does anyone remember Leann's CD... the one packed with country classics by Hank Sr., Marty Robbins, et al?

Also don't forget that looks count for a lot in this biz. She may have a better voice than Shania and Faith but... well...
nevermind...

Perhaps a face double for public appearances?

At the 1996 TSGA Jamboree, someone handed me a bizarre (I thought) tape. It was a cassette called "Leanne Rimes, The Early Years."

My reaction was, "she's only 14 now!? When were her freakin' early years?!" Junior had a laugh at that one. Image
