Went to the union yesterday to pick up a check for reruns from the Willie Nelson Network and one of the girls told me everyone is complaining about there not being enough work in town.Of course I already new that and I'm glad I'm not trying to make a living...I'd starve.Example:Jim Murphy runs a game room during the week and plays on Saturday nights at the Long Hollow Jamboree for the door.I clean carpet for a living and am fixin'to get back into playing for fun. What's wrong with this picture?Nashville sucks and I've been here almost 33 yrs. |

Earl, stay in Nashville. I've been driving 65 miles (each way) to do shows for $50. Then next Saturday (17th) I have to drive 100 miles (each way) to do an opening act at Silver Springs park but that one is big bucks -- $75.
(I guess I shouldn't complain at least I'm pickin) |

David - "Returns" are from the retailer-to distributor-to record company. Typically there is a provision for retailers to return a portion of unsold product within a specified amount of time back to distributors and ultimately the manufacturer/record company. By the way, look under www.tennessean.com You'll find under CD reviews that they are repackaging and releasing "Joe Maphis -Fire on the Strings", Charlie Rich, Kris Kristofferson. All older product that has a chance of making it because its "different". Best, Boomer |

Well now, I can see where the currently marketed "country music" could lose its popularity very quickly; it never was popular at all with the likes of me. But WSM-AM has recently been broadcasting some REAL GOOD stuff late at night and how 'bout them Time Jumpers! Maybe the rest of the industry will become interested in, or at least very aware of, this trend. Wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to make a living playing great music and having some young record-buying people actually LIKE it, instead of some of the shallow crap that is currently being produced? All right, so I'm dreaming but hey, stranger things have happened. For example, look at the phenomenon of how the "New Swing" has caught on in pop circles.

UGH! Yes, that's a great example of how the worst thing that could happen to something you love is for it to become popular.
For me, it's lead to such satisfying moments as:
- Playing with a quintet for a teen "swing dance" where all the kids refused to dance until we took a break and put on a record.
- Being told you didn't know anything about swing music unless you owned a Zoot Suit and a pair of Oakleys.
- Being advised that our band isn't as good to listen to as, say, a "real" swing record featuring Brian Setzer's screaming distorted electric guitar.
Sound parallel? Familiar? Oh yeah.
Man, I HATE pop culture

A very good friend of mine that has played drums for Trace Atkins for about 5 yrs is now unemployed. At the end of the year he let the whole band go stating that he wasn't getting enough bookings to afford to keep them and he was going to have to have another chart record or hit to boost his financial status. |

The local outlet in State College Pa has at the bottom of it's top 10 list Fire On the Strings.
As for Walmart cutting back on new country, it means that their distributer and it's limited selections are not enough to please folks who still use that route to buy music.
Just as a reference here areAmazons top 10 Country Albums of 2000
One Endless Night Jimmy Dale Gilmore
Blue Notes Paul Burch
DwightYockamAccusticnet Dwight Yockam
If I Could Only Fly Merle Haggard
American Recordings 3 Johnny Cash
The Hardest Part Allison Moorer
Bolsa de Agua The Goards
Tomorrows Sounds Today Dwight Yockam
Under the Country Underdog Kelly Hogan
Get A Load Of This Dave Stucky
At the time I posted this I had 6 of these albums. since that time I have picked up Dwight Yockam accustic and still have on my buy list Kelly Hogan, The Goards and Allison Moorer

Maybe Gaylords Nashville experience was influenced by the climate of where he came from, Oklahoma City.....It's always been an inside joke among musicians that OKC was a fairly good environment for "weekend" work, but if you had any desire to make a living at it, the first thing you needed to do was "hitchhike out of Oklahoma City and go somewhere else". |

Can you make any sense out of this?
It's the top twelve places in the Mosiqa International Artists' Poll. It represents the total number of fans who have logged on and voted over the past twelve months, worldwide.
It just goes to show , there's no accounting for taste!

When I spoke with the manager of the tv,cd area,He told me he had a memorandum telling him to cut the new Country orders in half and to monitor the good sellers carefully..I found this all out trying to get the Hags latest and Dwight Yokums..Both sold out..He said their was not a big movement in country sales except for the real known stars such as Jackson,Yokum,Strait.
