BJ,
Technically, I believe Puerto Rico is a US Possesion and is referred to as 'The Commonwealth of'; as in Massachusetts and Virginia; there are a couple other 'states'
I can't remember that also hold this distinction. FWIW<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by CHIP FOSSA on 19 September 2000 at 09:54 AM.]</p></FONT>

Oregon-- "Don't Take Me Alive" by Steely Dan.The chorus goes:
"I'm a bookkeeper's son/
I don't want to shoot no one/
Well I crossed my old man back in Oregon/
Don't take me alive"
Maryland-- Steve Goodman recorded a pretty Tin Pan Alley tune called "There's A Girl In The Heart Of Maryland."
Bob Dylan's "The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll" was about a murder in Baltimore and has the phrase "Maryland politics."

The New Riders Of The Purple Sage (Buddy Cage on steel although Jerry Garcia may have played on this cut, I'll have to check) have a song called "Portland Woman" ie Portland Oregon.
David Bromberg has a song called "New Lee Highway Blues" that starts off:
All through Northern Oregon
Always by my side
ect...
There are also a few songs about the Oregon Trail and the Columbia River which borders Oregon and Washington (which is also where I spend alot of time windsurfing ).

Illinois:
Dan Fogelberg had a song out by the name of "Illinois". All I can remember was the chorus: "Illinois! Oh, Illinois!" (Not much to go on, eh?)
New Jersey:
How 'bout the big band number "Jersey Bounce" (Joan Cox plays a pretty hot version of that on steel).
Puerto Rico:
How 'bout Leonard Bernstein/West Side Story:
<i>"I like the city of San Juan
I know a boat you can get on!"
</i>and...
<i>And every Puerto Rican's a lousy chicken!"<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by Jim Cohen on 19 September 2000 at 07:01 PM.]</p></FONT>
