Post by BJ Bailey »

We know in alot of songs Texas and Tennesee are refered to often in the lyric's by composer's.
My question is this.
Can you think of a state ,that you have never heard of mention in a song
For intance, I have never heard one that mentioned Oregon?

"What did Della Wear?" by Pat Boone(?)- but this is probably cheating 'cos all the states were in that except Hawaii

I can only think of a few states that are mentioned - Ohio, Cal, NY, Montanna, and the two you mentioned.

..there must be something from the Oregon Trail days with the name in it...

...come from Alambama with a b@^&o on my knee, and I'm gone to Loosiana my true love for to see....

....third box-car, midnight train, destination Bangor, Maine....

..deep in the heart of Texas...

....carry me back to old Virginny....

...going to Carolina in my mind....

...four dead in Ohio....

....Gary Indiana Gary Indiana Gary Indiana...

...Riding on the City of New Orleans, Illinois Central, Monday morning rail....

...It was just after dark when the truck started down, the hill that leads into Scranton, Pennsylvania....carrying 30,000 lbs....of bananas....

...It's up to you, New York, New York..

..Ooooooooooklahoma, where the wind comes whistling down the plains....

...Almost Heaven, West Virginia, Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River....

..Oh the sun shines bright on my old Kentucky home...

....Tennessee Waltz...

....Colorado Rocky Mountain High, I've seen it raining fire in the sky....

....to Winslow, Arizona got 7 women on my mind, one that wants to own me, two that want to stone me...

...now I've made my way back home again, to the boys in Idaho, that's how this business goes..I am the morning D.J. at W.O.L.D....

...California here I come....

....Georgia, Georgia....(Ray Charles style)

....Mississippi Queen, you know what I mean....

....

....don't know of any with "New Jersey" in it.

..couldn't think of any either for Florida, Vermont, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Missouri, Kansas (Kansas City doesn't count, it's about the city) Nebrasks, Iowa, North or South Dakota, Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin (Other than "On Wisconsin") Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, Wyoming, Montana, Hawaii or Alaska.

....I did just remember one from the band Black Oak Arkansas, tune was "Uncle Lijah", line was "so he jumped in bed with his ma and pa, and he told them that the Devil was in Arkansas".....

Don't know about Oregon, but I'll bet Idaho still cringes when Joe Stampley sings about 'The green of Cour'd'd'laine' in "Roll On Big Mama."

Wahington State got it's mention in Woody Guhrie's Roll On Columbia back in the 30s.

Jude, how could I have forgotten "Rocky Raccoon"! We could count that as both Dakota's if we have to...I counted both Carolina's as one.

...there's a James Taylor song called "The Millworker" with the line "My grandfather was a sailor, he blew in off the water, my father was a farmer, and I his only daughter...took off with a no-good mill-workin' man from Massachusetts, who dies from too much whiskey and leaves me these three faces to feed...

Oh....I just thought of one with both New Jersey and Michigan in it....Simon and Garfunkel's "America"..."Kathy, I said, as we boarded a Greyhound in Pittsburg...Michigan seems like a dream to me now..."

..and "Kathy, I'm lost, I said though I knew she was sleeping..I'm empty and aching and I don't know why...counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike, they've all come to look for America...."<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by Pat Burns on 18 September 2000 at 05:41 PM.]</p></FONT>

Hi Pat ,
I'm almost certain I have heard " Delaware " used in a song . Someone like Randy Newman , L.W.III. or Warren Zevon .

Hey Casey ,I forgot about Hank Snow singing I''ve been everywhere.
Man, do'nt you just know that back when I had hair on my head and country was alive.

Pat Burns, nice job . Do you sing in the shower much? You could'nt think of one in Florida?
I heard Johnny Cash sing about the Orange Blossom Special,

Well ,Im going down to Florida to get alittle sand in my shoes, then ride that Orange Blossom Special, and carry away my blue's

As for Road Iland ,there is a fiddle tune called Road Iland Red

Being a resident here, the Bee Gees had somewhat of a hit with "Massachusetts".

Bruce Springsteen had a song and album called Nebraska, is Oregon still the hardest to find?

In Ireland there is a singer who has been around since the 60's called Art Supple, his trademark is doing a song from each of Ireland's 32 counties in a row.

I wracked my brain trying to come up with something for Maryland and couldn't think of a thing. Baltimore's made it into a couple of tunes ("Streets of Baltimore" and Roger Miller's "Engine, Engine, Number 9") but not the whole state.

It occurs to me that it may have gotten mentioned in Mary-Chapin Carpenter's "Down in Mary's Land", but the title is a reference to St. Mary's County and I don't recall if she mentioned the state.
