Well, I bought a Virginian, a few instructional tapes, and I can fuddle my way through a couple of songs...but I do it sitting down. I don't even have a strap. Is it hard to get used to playing standing up, and is it easier that way? Are there any straps that seem to be better than others? Is there a place to order custom straps, maybe with your name on it? I want to look good, even if I can't play...

Don't know what kind of music you'll be playing. Some genres sort of require a "stand up" performance.
Yes...it takes some getting used to as you have to support the guitar while playing.
As for straps...the Webb, now made and sold by Resophonic Outfitters is my favorite. I prefer the 3" wide variety. Oh..be sure to spend a few more $$ and get a strap lock!!
I'm sure others will have their favorites also.

I like a 3" wide strap. You will want a long guitar strap and one of those gizmos that ties to the headstock. Planet Waves makes a nice simple one with a strap lock. You might consider a strap lock for the end pin also.
Some folks play with the arms free, under the strap. Some play with the strap twisted around the right forearm for more control.
A strap feels good sitting down, too. It won't slide off the lap. That security helps you to play less tense.

There are dobro specific straps that are made to better support the peghead end of the guitar. You should not need 2 strap locks imho. Just on the body!
