Hi,
Any one have suggestions for a dark noirish 6 string tuning? Maybe even one that's good for surf/spy/ambient?
I use C6. I like it, I'm just looking for some good ideas.
I like Gary Brandin's sound on The Vanduras. Particularly the title track, "In the Dark".

C6th will take you far. Many classic surf tunes lay out in C6th quite well.
For a more ambient, unrsolved sound you might try some of the modal tunings like D sus (DADGAD) or some of the impressionistic tunings Bob lists at bobbrozman.com.
A minor/major seventh chord is the classic spy guitar chord. |

Andy's suggestions are great.
Since I don't know you, might I ask if you have fully considered just how many different tunings C6 actually is relative to other keys, tonics, neck positions, etc?

Besides the modal contexts shown in the info on those links, the frets in-between offer some quite exotic scales and chords.
By combining exotic tunings as Andy suggests, with mapping out those tunings on the neck as shown in the chart I suggested, ...a whole universe of Steel voicing is opened up.

Hi Eric,
I'm glad you like my sound on the 'Vanduras' CD. On the track you made mention of, I'm playing a 8 string Rickenbacker tuned to C6th with the fifth on top.
