Californian honky tonkin'

Post by Jason Odd »

Okay, off topic has been a little light on my fave subject and at risk of driving everyone nuts, let's go with Californian stone country.
I'm always looking for another 'stone' country CA group, lotsa steel, twangin' chickin' pickin, harmonies or 'nasal' lead are cool with me!..Cd's and Lp's are a must!
Just think of the people Al Bruno, Billy Mize, Jack Tucker, Sammy Masters, Ray Sanders, Cliff Crofford, Clarke Rohn, Eddie Drake, Red Simpson, Fred and Rose Maddox, Glen Garrison, Clarence White, Norm Raleigh, Johnny Meeks, Merrill Moore, Jimmy Snyder, Bobby Wayne Edrington, Don Holiman, Skip Graves, Jerry Cole,

Sure there's the big names, like Buck Owens & the Buckaroos, with the Buckaroos recording their own Lp's between 1966-1971.

Merle Haggard and the Strangers, with Merle's debut LP in 1965 the group was formed later in 1965 and issued their own Lp's in 1969 to 1973.

Wynn Stewart, a classic, now at last with a box set collecting all his glory.
Then there is others like Bobby Austin, the Gosdin Brothers, the Chapparel Brothers {thanks Ray Cothren for turning me on to them}, who recorded for Capitol Records in the 1960's and still have no Cd reissues.

Jimmy Bryant & Speedy West have had a lot of 1950's material reissued, but Jimmy's 1960's Lp's are poorly represented.
I guess a big thing for me is trying to get this stuff, I wasn't even born in the 1960's, and I'm nto from CA, so getting out there and finding CD reissues or compilations is a real treat...does anyone know of any?
Bear Family of Germany have done sets on the Farmer Boys, Tommy Collins, the Hag, Wynn Stewart, Skeets McDonald, Jean Shepard, The Collins Kids, Warren Smith, Tommy Duncan, Merrill Moore, Ole Rasmussen and others.

Joaquin Records has reissues of Billy Jack Wills sides from the 1950's.

Country Routes, has Tex Williams {1940's sides},among others

STOMPER TIME RECORDS..has:
JOHNNY CASH 'TENNESSEE TOP CAT - COTTON TOWN JUBILEE' CTJCD 1
With live stuff from his west Coast days, including quite a few 1961 'Star Route'live tracks, introduced by Red Cameron, some Town Hall Party apearences from 1956-1959, Compton, Cal. and from 1957 The complete original soundtrack from the motion picture starring JOHNNY CASH, MERLE TRAVIS, EDDIE DEAN, JOHNNY WESTERN & GORDON TERRY which features the original recording of DON'T TAKE YOUR GUNS TO TOWN. JOHNNY CASH & the TENNESSEE TWO {and THREE}featured on all tracks. All previously unreleased 'LIVE' recordings - manufactured in Germany - 1995 - Playing Time - 71 minutes.
-------------------
HONKY TONK ROCKABILLIES - VOLUME 1 COTTON TOWN JUBILEE - CTJCD 3
With BOB LUMAN, CARL BUTLER,WARNER MACK,MARTY ROBBINS, LEFTY FRIZELL, RONNIE SELF, GENE DAVIS, MIMI ROMAN, GEORGE JONES,
PORTER WAGONER, JOE MAPHIS, GENE DAVIS & JERRY INMAN duet...songs range from 1957 to 1964 and all from live shows in SoCal.Manufactured in Germany in 1997.
--------------
HONKY TONK ROCKABILLIES - VOLUME TWO
COTTON TOWN JUBILEE CTJCD 4
JOE MAPHIS - CARL SMITH - JOHNNY - JOE & ROSE LEE - WEBB PIERCE - LONZO & OSCAR (1.55)- SPADE COOLEY - WARNER MACK - I WALK THE LINE - JOHNNY CASH - FARON YOUNG - MERLE TRAVIS - MARTY - SKEETS McDONALD - ROSE MADDOX - TOM TALL - GORDON - SKEETER DAVIS - BOB WILLS & TOMMY DUNCAN ..mainly live sources from 1940's to 1965!..Manufactured in Germany in 1997
----------------
TOPPA RECORDS is back, no longer on the West coast, but there's the CD "Toppa Country Then And Now" from 1996, 25 Tracks on it with Gene Davis-Eddy Drake-Bill Rubertus-Chuck Mills-Dick Miller-Wade Ray Judy Lane-Barbara Davenport-Vern Stovall/Phil Baugh-Ellen Eugene Johnston-Don Rice-Billy Armstrong Johnny & Jonie Mosby-Jimmy Snyder-Janet McBride-Milt Forester-Jack Tucker-Smiley Monroe.
Toppa also has a 1997 Cd by Ralph Mooney with a few old West Coast cronies in Nashville.

Sundazed who do the Buck Owens Cd's have an interesting CD "Wail Man Wail" Vol. 3
With sides by Ralph Mooney(1958) Gene Davis ,Johnnie & Jonie McCrory {might actually be the Collins Kids},Dave Burgess
Wynn Stewart, Bobby Milano, The Barker Bros, Jim and Rod, Kip Tyler & his Flips Jerry Arnold, Dean Beard and his Crewcuts. All late 1950's stuff.

There's finally a Cd reissue of James Burton's "Guitar Sounds Of James Burton" from 1971, while his 1968 LP with Ralph Mooney has been out for a while on CD.

Red Simpson has a 1999 Cd best of covering his 1966-1971 singles and in Europe his first two Lp's from 1966 are on one CD.

People who have {as I know it} deleted Lp's are Billy Mize, Ray Sanders, Sammy Masters {his 1964 gospel LP}, Vern Stovall, Janet McBride, Phil Baugh, Eddie Drake, Buddy Cagle, Johnny Carver, Red Rhodes, Tex Williams {there are some reissues}, Glen Garrison, Gene Davis, Garland Frady, etc.
Anyone know of any CD reissues?

I forgot to mention that Buck Owens and Merle Haggard's 1960's output is fairly well represented on Cd, with Merle he has Cd's of his 1970's to 1990's stuff out as well.
Although neither of their groups have Cd's out at all.
Ex- Buckaroos tom Brumley and Doyle Holly do have Cds of their own though.

Bonnie Owens has only got a cassette out in 1998, since her last LP in 1971!

Don Hoilman... did he work in Vegas for a few years? Great singer as I recall.
Sammy Masters, Al Bruno, Billy Mize. I used to see these guys and would sit in once in awhile. Yep, those were the good old days.

Hi Dayna,
Yes Don went to Vegas for many years although he is Nashville based now like Jimmy Snyder. Don did his last Vegas casino residency in December 1999, now he's retired from the Casinos.
Dayna, did you know that Sammy Masters cut a rockabilly Cd in 1998, it's sensational, I heard it at a friends place and I was blown away!

Although the Warren Smith Liberty LP hasn't been re-issued as such, it is included in its entirety on the Bear Family CD "Call of the Wild" BCD 15495 which also includes some Liberty 45's that didn't make the LP

Yeah, good call Ray, it covers the 1960-1964 era I believe.
Also the 1963 Tex Williams Lp cut live in Vegas has been on Cd for some years, through Rhino I think.
Still trying to find out if that 1968 Bobby Durham still exists Ray, sheesh!

Yeah that's pretty cool, and almost the complete Desert Rose Band..kinda.
It's labels like Arhoolie, Bloodshot, Joaquin and others that are digging up some great stuff from the 1940's, but the 1960's and 1970's stuff is pretty thin to find on the ground.
There's a lot of transcriptions turned into CD's of 1940's and 1950's material but the latter era is pretty light with live material.
All I can think of, off the top of my head is the 'Nashville West' CD which was cut by the group in El Monte in 1967 with Clarence White, etc.
It came out on Lp in 1979, and on Cd around 1998.
There's also the CD of Jimmie Rivers with Vance Terry in his group, that's a good example of what live tapes can show and provide the rest of us with.

B0b, did you ever back Rose live?

If anyone runs across some Bud Crowder records on Toppa I sure would like a copy. He had Mooney playing on them.

I tried to email you Perry, but the email keeps coming back, have you changed your email address from the one that's on the forum.

Hiya Perry, it's no problem, we'll catch up at some stage, via email.
I guess if you are curious about Toppa, you could try contacting them. Their address is:
Toppa Records, 1898 N.W. Davidson Way, Terrebonne, Oregon 97760.
Telephone: 541-548-4628.
Jack Morris is still the main man, Tom Bradshaw said he gets the Ralph Mooney direct from Jack.

Hey Jason,
Your opening post looks like a who's who of people I've either worked with or worked for in my So.Cal days! The old Foothill Club in Signal Hill (Long Beach) was a venue where I worked with Billy Mize, Cliff Crofford, Ray Sanders, Mayf Nutter, Garland Frady, and a bunch of others. Those were some great times. I did a stint with Sammy Masters which was interesting to say the least! Another gig was in the 60's with Fred Maddox at his club called "The King of the Bass" in Ventura. Since Rose was his sister we could get her for a guest easy. I remember the first time I played behind her it was really cool! I used a Fender Amp with 4 10's and a portable Fender Reverb unit. I used to sit the amp on a chair and the reverb on the floor under the chair. When Rose was called up she started her first song which was "Sally Let Your Bangs Hang Down" or something like that. Where most people would pat their foot to keep time ol' Rose stomped her whole leg and I mean she stomped it! My reverb started going nuts and it sounded like a very large thunder and lightning storm coming out of my amp. I had to stop playing and move it off the bandstand before I could continue. The last job I had before I left was with Clark Rohn in north Long Beach at a club called DJ's Ranch. Clark had an 8 track studio and his own label called RedHill records. We did a lot of stuff out there. He had an old Ampex 8 track board which was all tube. Talk about a vintage sound. I always liked it though, it was pretty warm. We made some good extra money in that place!

Hiya Jerry,
That Rose Maddox story is a crack-up, a long time ago there was a topic on the forum about all the steel players who had worked with Rose and at that stage it was like half the forum that had worked with her.
Rose also used to play a lot at the 101 Club as one of her husbands used to own it.
Jerry, what ever happened to Clark?

On a note directly linked to this topic, a friend of mine from Europe just emailed me today and he is a West coast freak, he gives Gene Moles a birthday phone call, the whole trip.
He asked me what was out there, the West coast twang,..that is availabel now, he has quite a bit of the Cd reissues that are out,but sadly there isn't a lot.
There's been talk of Bear Family issuing some material by Sammy Masters, but nothing has come of it.
LP's by Al Brumley, the Buckaroos, The Strangers, the golden State Boys, Danny Michaels & the Rebel Playboys, Eddie Drake, Gosdin Brothers, Chapparal Brothers, Bobby Austin and so many others are just sitting in vaults all over LA.
It breaks my heart to know that all of this stuff is just sitting there and the artists that made it are getting nothing out of all of this.

BJ, Johnny is based in Tennessee, not sure exactly, but he has a regular group going with forumite Ron Elliott on pedal steel.
He hasn't recorded for some years, it's a shame he's another artist that could do with a deal, but then we'll just add him to the list.
As I have read, and Jerry Hayse pointed out a long time ago, Johnny was actually part of the Palomino Club house band, I'd say around 1965, but I won't know for sure until I actually get to interview him one day.
