Ouch; good point Bill. Steve, I imagine that, yes, those folks were striving for attention when they got their alterations and if you ask them they will probably tell you as much. I've heard many people say they wished they hadn't done it (tatoos). And b0b, my four daughters are welcome to pierce or dye anything they please after they're 18 or living elsewhere.

As for your question, Bill, it's like the supreme court said about porn; it's hard to define, but I know it when I see it. Same for country music. What I find amusing is that across the different 'pop' genres, the basic structure is the same; everybody's working with the same building blocks. Balls= testosterone= male agression= patriarchy= politically incorrect. So, I suppose the answer to the premise lies with the accountant/producer/distributor relationship. It seems to be an avoidance of controversy which I don't understand; I thought controvery always SOLD product.

"Country Music has no Balls". What a blanket statement. It ain't all bad nowadays is it? I guess I'm an old hippie or something but I like a lot of what they do today as it reminds me of the Eagles a group who I think were wonderful. It's true that a lot of the stuff today sounds alike and people have said it's because of the same musicians getting all the sessions. There's probably a lot of truth in that. How many hooks can Brent or Paul come up with. Even they have to run out of ideas sometime. They should just shut down Nashville and let all the artists record in Texas or California and maybe there'd be some stuff with balls. As for the body piercing, I've had my left ear pierced since 1966 and still wear something in it from time to time. I think if ol' Hank was around today he'd be all tattooed up and have a nose ring! The last really ballsy artist out of Nashville was Hank Jr. I love the ending on Family Tradition with that out of tune guitar note. Those producers in Nashville now sure wouldn't leave it in! Maybe there's hope on the horizon with the Derailers and Dale Watson. If they could only get some national air play they'd take off for sure. And for Sleepy John, I put that b@njo joke on the Humor section about a week ago, right after I told it to you!

I think that Country Music is a true American Art form like Jazz....it can be interpreted many different ways...and has gone through many changes with the time as does any true American Art Form.
For Example:

OLd Jazz= Dixieland and early swing sounds of the 1930's

New Jazz= Yellow Jackets and Take Six.

Old Country= Jimmie Rodgers
New Country= Alan Jackson

There has been a change with time.....

Many may not want to accept that change will take place and what we knew as children as one thing evolves into something else.......it is called growing up.

If you choose not to grow up then that is your decision..........get with the times...or do you still watch B & W TV?

Personal Taste is not an issue here......it is an issue of accepting change or not.....

Do you think......?

Old Country: Jimmie Rogers
New Country: Alan Jackson
True, and they are both country, with balls. But where do Shania Twain,Tim McGraw, Faith Hill (shall I go on?) fit in. It is MY OPINION that they are NOT country. How many Darrell Singeltary records you heard latley? He is country and has big ole balls but he didn't sell five gazillion records so they dropped him. My point is, COUNTRY MUSIC HAS AND ALWAYS WILL HAVE BALLS. The record executives don't have the balls to put it out.

Dumplin,

I hear you brother! Daryl Singletary has some of the biggest CW balls..... I mean You have heard "The Note" please!!! Thats the real thing.

As for the rest of the "lot" you mentioned..it comes down to MARKETING...if the labels market it as Counry Music then the public's perception of Country Music is just that.

It is the labels fault..if you think about it.... They produce the stuff..is it necessarily the ARTIST?? Maybe is in some cases yes...but they are just happy to get their deal after 10yrs of beating down doors.....

MARKETING is the reason SHANIA is labeled Country.
MARKETING is the reason GARTH is "Chris Gaines"
MARKETING is the reason that Faith Hill appeals to the 13yo MTV generation....

PONDER THIS: If Daryl Singletary was given the 1> Budget
2> Attention
3> Press
4> MARKETING
then he would also be up there with Garth and Tim McG.

It is a business and until it follows your quote above Music will always be Number 2.

My thoughts.....etc.....

Johnny,
I think Shania, Tim, Faith bring a fresh new outlook on country today. I know alot of you don't like it, the thing is they use steel guitar.
Darryl along with other acts are not selling to the public. What does that tell you?
Listen to the country count down and you'll hear whose selling today!

Theresa, you are correct, they use steel on the version they send to the country market, the big sales usually comes from the pop version, and in most cases the steel has been replaced by keyboards or guitar. I suppose we will just have to agree to disagree on this one. I am concerned with what happens musically, not how many pockets get full.

I totally agree with JC on the Shania,Tim and Faith being country issue.Heck they are good and have put out great stuff but Country? Nah,I don't think so.But I just exercise my choice not to buy those CD's.I do have one gigundo collection of what I like to listen to.Now and then Nashville makes a mistake and releases a Country song and If I like it I buy it.It was great to have lived during and worked with true country loving musicians and Artist. And there are still plenty of you out there by the looks of things. Joe,
No one is telling you what to buy. I'm glad you love the country music you grew up with.
I'm glad for what I grew up with, please don't say what I love isn't worthy! Theresa

Dixie Chicks sure do have some balls ! That tune "Earl" is all over the radio. They are country and are selling plenty of CDs. VH1 told them to take the steel( you know...too country) off a track to get airplay when they first started(before they had a hit). Those women told the programmers at VH1 to kiss there asses. They have balls !

Well country music in Fort Worth has Balls and it's being played at "Big Balls of Cowtown". Every Fri., Sat., and Sun.,. The only thing the band is missing is some of those wooden spoons.

Why are we so afraid to label the pop-techno-country (or what ever you want to call it)for what it is. Country music was country music and today it isn't. If I saw an advertisement for a classical concert featuring Mozarts Symphony #7 only to find the orchestra consisted of distortion guitar and electronic piano and bagpipes I would be as disappointed as I am going to listen to a so called country act today. Off the wall analogy but you get my point.

Full apologies Theresa if you thought I was attacking your taste in Music.I was just agreeing and expressing my own feelings and expieriences which is what we all do.After re-reading my post I don't see where I said anything about anyone's music being unworthy.I just stated I am thankful, loyal and believe in mine.
[This message was edited by Joe Casey on 23 March 2000 at 05:49 AM.]

Joe,
No apologies necessary! Image
Musicans have so much more to listen and learn from today.
Being loyal to a certain music, does not mean you can't play other kinds of music.

Yes, I think country music has balls and it can be a ball!
