Mike:
Missed the show but I agree with what you say about Connie Smith. Always been my favorite female Country singer. I imagine most country music guys our age have been in love with her since they first saw her! Drop dead gorgeous and a voice to match. What's not to love??

Is it some kind of inside joke among Opry hosts to misspeak the names of NCS-type artists? The other week it was Kitty Willis, last night it was David Stone.
When Doug Stone came on, Mrs. Lee said "I've never even heard of this guy." About halfway through his first song I realized why. I told her, "He's a rock and roll star, dear. They have them on the Opry now." No comment.
Other than that, the show was pretty good, IMHO.

I missed the show, but if it's the same Doug Stone whose first 3 CD's I have, then I'm sorry to hear that he's taking a rock direction.
Is this the same guy who sang, "I'd Be Better Off in a Pine Box", and "Jukebox With a Country Song"?
His career was interrupted when he went through a heart attack or two and a divorce. I guess he's back now, but if what b0b says is true, I won't be buying his latest release.

Ron,
Doug Stone did "Take A Letter Maria." I don't know if that makes him a rock 'n' roll star. Anyway, I hope you won't let that keep you from buying his new cd. His new single is a slow country song and I believe it's doing well in the charts. I'm sure you'll be hearing it on the radio.

Moi? Hear it on the radio? FM?
I remember that song. It has seen it’s share of the pop charts. Who was it, not Tony Orlando and Dawn?
If Doug’s new stuff is anything like the first 3, it will be on my wish list. I bet that PF guy played steel on those earlier albums. How about the latest one?

Sorry if I seemed to be dissing Doug. I actually think he's a pretty good country singer. It's just that his songs and presentation on last week's Opry were not what Mrs. Lee & I expect of an Opry performer.
Mr. Stone is doing exactly what today's FM radio requires. His records sell and he keeps his kids in shoes. There's nothing wrong with that. I'd be proud to be in his band and share the stage with the caliber of talent that he has assembled. (Not that he would call me or anything. I just want it understood that I DO respect him and others in his position.)

Ron-R.B.Greaves had the pop hit on"Take a Letter",and Anthony Armstrong Jones had a country chart record on it,I think(it's been a long time). |

I like the sound of "David" Stone. Has that name been taken by anybody?
"Kitty" Willis is a small potatoes misnomer. The all-time best flubber, the most appropriate, belongs to Bill Monroe, back in the 1970's. If y'all remember, Olivia Newton John ( !?) was named "Female Singer of the Year" by the CMA (ha ha ha!). Mr. Bill presented the award, opened the envelope, had a look of confusion on his face and announced "the winner is... (long pause)... OLIVER Newton John!"
Yeah, buddy!!

Hey, this was one of the best opry shows we have had in a long time. I'm always out on Sat. nites, but I do try to tape it if someone I enjoy is going to be appearing. Connie, Jim Ed, the Stevens Sisters, and even good old David Stone. Awful good, awful good. Pat |
