Rick,
That's a lovely MSA, and I remember the last time it was up F/S....
I have a D-12 Classic, but I'm not too familiar with the Vintage XL's. I'm curious about the bridge/changer/basket designs~ lgfout had one up for sale not long ago with the design Im more familiar with:

Does anyone know which came first? Why the change was made?
thanks,
-Mike

Well, Rick, that's an important little bit of history. Maybe you should use that as part of the write-up. Reese is very well known and if it was made for him, I'm sure it received extra special care in it's build and choice of wood.
This is the third goldmine I missed in the last 2 weeks. Someone is gonna get one he!! of a great axe!!
If you like U12s, you better jump on this one....IMHO, Vintage XLs are one of the best U12s you can get....NO IF'S, AND'S OR BUT'S!!

Yes, if I was a little younger I would have bought it from Richard G. when he had it. I have had a few XL S12 MSA's and they are keepers.
Richard takes good care of his MS guitars...al

On the cover of the very first issue of Steel Guitarist magazine, dated January 1978 there is a large photo of Reece sitting at a green MSA Vintage XL that looks in almost every respect just like the one linked to your post. The only differences I can see is that the changer mechanism is not the same and there is a Supersustain II decal running along the front of the fingerboard. Since Reece obviously had the run of the factory, I imagine he made a number of modifications while he owned your guitar.
As a matter of interest, MSA enthusiasts may be interested in knowing that I own the predecessor to that guitar. Several years ago I called Reece about the serial number on a MSA guitar I acquired for Vance Terry, who was ailing and unable to lift the double-11 double-tiered Sierra he is famous for. On an impulse I asked Reece about my own MSA S-12, a burgundy curly maple model. He checked his records and said "I'll be darned. You have got my guitar!" Turns out he had had it built for himself and used it until a rush order came in that needed to be filled pronto and he sent it off to Chicago, then had another built. If memory serves, the successor was your guitar. Maybe Reece can chime in on this if I have got any details wrong.
Anyway, good luck. Possibly b0b has some copies of that magazine left. If not, let me know and maybe I can scan the cover for you.
Best wishes,
Mylos Sonka

My apologies for not answering sooner. I spent Monday/Tuesday night at Baylor Med Ctr. and the rest of days at home.
To all that who are interested, the price on the steel is $1600 FIRM. I paid $2000.00 from Richard Gonzalez just last year, the steel has never been gigged or even taken out of the house except for a trip to Bud Carter to swap the A and C pedals.
I am already taking a beating on selling this steel. If you are still interested call me, 214-726-5980, as I do not know when I will be able to get online again.
Thanks,
Rick
