I've been slowly learning my way around on this great tuning, but being "theory challanged", I am in need of advice;

I have a Higgins Peg Bender which is a pedal that attaches to one of the tuning keys on a resonator guitar and would like to use it with a half tone raise.

I can use the 7 string tuning (L>H)
A C E G A C E and raise the 6th string to C#, which gives me the basic 8 string C6/A7 with the C# out of the way until I need it...

or

use the 8 string tuning A C C# E G A C E and put the half tone raise....somewhere. Should I raise the C# to D?, low E to F? Since I already have the C# for the dom 7th, I wouldn't need a Bb, right? Where would I put the raise and why?

Brad, I know this is about a pedal, but it's not a pedal steel topic or tuning. So, will you let me "slide" on this one?

I would recommend you bend the 2nd string to a C# and keep the latter tuning. This would give you truly the best of all worlds as I see it.

Good luck and may Jesus bless you,

I like Carl's idea, it gives you that High A tuning on top. How much does that device cost Howard and can you hook it up your self and take it off again fast? What about a picture of it? Thanks...

This is a cable foot pedal made by violin builder Brad Higgins. I met him at the PSGA show last November and he had one of these hooked up to a metal Johnson and he was doing some cool stuff. The one on his site is a B bender.

Check out his pedal dobro that he built...talented guy....and nice.

He at one time tried to market these for resonators but it didn't take off. I did a fair amount of coaxing to get one. I don't think he makes them anymore but as the song goes..."Maybe I'm right, and maybe I'm wrong."
I'm usually the latter so you'll have to inquire directly.

The C# on top does give me a major triad without skip grips or slants, and also gives me a strumable 6 string dom 7th.

Howard, I would go with what Carl says. with that C# it is like a reverse E to F pedal on E9. very useful, gives a nice A major, and A7, A minor 7th and even more....al

That's a cool device. I wonder if you can put two on the dobro.

I think I remember Brad mentioning that you could only put one on a keyhead. I don't know why. Maybe because all he had was the one. Again, best to contact him.

I will post a photo of the pedal when I have it back in my possesion. Carroll Benoit is working on a very special guitar that incorporates this pedal.

I am very curious about this device. I checked the website, though, and the description wasn't terribly illuminating. For instance, what does the actual pedal part look like? And how does it work? Can you raise or lower, or just raise? Or both? How much of a raise or lower can you get?

This is a small rectangular metal box with a small rectangular foot pedal. The cable runs out of the box and is attached to a special tuning key with spring action. Although I don't have it to photograph right now, it is very well made.

This is a raise only pedal. It is adjustable for whatever you want, I believe. I would not want to raise more than a half tone because the string is pulling through a fixed bone nut. This pedal will also be on an 8 string resonator, and there is enough pressure from those 8 strings on the cone already.

Interesting. Is there absolutely no way to get it to lower? Could you wind the string on backwards, or something?
